Untitled[edit]

Someone who knows this better than I do may want to edit this page to give the historical link between UMB and UMCP. There is a wealth of information on these at [mdmanual.net http://www.mdmanual.net]. --Howardjp 13:40, 22 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Comma or no comma[edit]

Looking through this page's history, I've noticed a couple of edits removing the comma from the names of both the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. I'm not sure about UMES (although it would make sense for it to be consistent with the others) but UMBC does in fact use a comma in it's name (check the address near the bottom of UMBC's home page), the comma is also used on the main page for the Blackboard Learning System at UMBC (which requires login). I won't change it now, just in case those are both mistakes, although it seems unlikely.-Jeff 19:25, 13 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Update: Upon checking the UMES site, it seems that they write their name without the comma, so that one won't be changed. 207.255.185.129 20:07, 13 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
University of Maryland, College Park and University of Maryland, Baltimore both have a comma. None of University of Maryland Baltimore County, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, nor University of Maryland University College have a comma. I've posted this like a zillion times. The most current version of the Maryland law establishing the University System of Maryland (from 2004) is my source. It is incorrect for UMBC to use a comma. -Howardjp 23:03, 13 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect target[edit]

I announced this change almost two weeks before making it at Talk:University of Maryland, College Park#Dumb redirect and nobody complained then. Over the past several months, I've cleaned up some 300 pages that linked to the wrong place because of this bad redirect. Putting that redirect back in will only bring more more false information into Wikipedia. -Howardjp 13:40, 25 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Order of listing[edit]

Would it perhaps make sense to first list the comma schools, as primary holders of the U of Maryland name, and then to list the non-comma schools afterwards? I don't think anyone would ever refer to either UMBC or UMES as "the University of Maryland," but people refer to both College Park and Baltimore in this way. john k 15:12, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I can't imagine that non-alphabetical ordering makes sense. Especially because the list is only five members and anyone can, at a glance, determine what is going on. If the list were longer, like more than 20, you'd have a good point, but I cannot see it being an issue with the current list. -James Howard (talk/web) 15:19, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

College Park[edit]

I think University of Maryland should automatically redirect to University of Maryland, College Park, as this is the overwhelmingly most common usage. We can put a "see" topper on UMD-CP's page, much like University of Texas does. Woodshed 09:32, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The important thing here is that four of the five (UMBC being the exception) have actually been known as just "University of Maryland" at some point in the past. But all of UMAB's degrees are given in the name of "University of Maryland" and I understand graduate degrees from UMBC are given in the name of "University of Maryland" or "University of Maryland Graduate School." So there are a lot of good reasons not to do it. And really just the NCAA affiliation in its favor, and that's pretty weak reasoning for a nonsportscentric encyclopedia. -James Howard (talk/web) 00:41, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Maryland Gridiron Network[edit]

The MGN is not run by the University and therefore I do not think it should be merged here. The MGN does however support the Maryland Terrapins Football team. Perhaps that's the page it should be merged with. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Johneweb (talkcontribs) 01:27, 4 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Request for redirect[edit]

Note that some very cool statistics are up on popularity of various Wikipedia pages. You can check it out for yourself here. I've gone through the popularity of the exact titles that are listed on this page, here are the following statistics for number of times various pages were viewed in February 2008:

For now I'm going to go ahead and put University of Maryland University College right above University of Maryland Baltimore County, since that page is getting nearly twice the views. I also think there's a nice flow of flagship university then underneath you have the professional school, then underneath you have the continuing education center of the University System of Maryland. Let me know if there are any objections.

I'd also like to request that we do a redirect from University of Maryland to University of Maryland, College Park since this page appears to be viewed most by far, and is in fact the term used most often to refer to that particular university (for example, see what's at http://www.umd.edu. If no one complains after a few days I'll make the move, otherwise let me know. 129.2.175.79 (talk) 18:09, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No one seems to have complained but I thought about it. I'll leave the ordering as is, but not kill this disambig page entirely (at least this week). If you have any thoughts either way, let me know on my talk page (when I remember to log in. 69.143.226.129 (talk) 07:43, 10 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
