Utbah and Barira[edit]

The (unreferenced) statement that Utbah was the original owner of the slave Barira appears to be an error.

Although Ibn Saad states that Barira declared to Aisha, "I belonged to Utba ibn Abi Luhayb, and his wife and sons will sell me..." this cannot have happened any later than 627, since Barira was in Aisha's service by the end of that year. Utbah was still alive in Mecca at that date; and Muslim 9:3590 states that Barira's owner was an Ansar from Medina.

Bukhari 3:46:739 refers to a slave of Utba ibn Abi Luhayb who, at a much later date, was in a legal position similar to Barira's, so Aisha cited the case of Barira as a legal precedent. It seems that the two traditions have been conflated.Petra MacDonald (talk) 15:01, 12 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
