Lace origins[edit]

One of the important aspects of this dress, and not so far mentioned, is the issue of the lace trim. One of the wedding gifts had been a suite of Brussels lace for the trousseau. However following the example of Queen Victoria and her "buy British" attitude, this was ignored in favour of new lace from Honiton. Both were of very high quality, but the snubbing of the Brussels lace was something of an insult to its giver and this switch was a politically notable move.
