Zenyatta's Racing Triumphs Comparable To Man O' War's
[edit]It's worth noting that, although Zenyatta is so far undefeated (19 wins out of 19 starts) and Man O' War won "only" 20 out of 21 starts, his single loss was under special circumstances. He had the worst possible start--the race began when his backside was to the barrier. By the time he got straightened out and started his run, the field was far away. Inspite of this, astonished spectators saw him overtake horse after horse. He came in second, losing by half a length. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Younggoldchip (talk • contribs) 20:58, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
Courage in a Horse?
[edit]Can a horse really exhibit "trememdous and couragous effort"? I know little to nothing about horse racing, but that really stood out to me in the description of her final race. Just figured I'd bring that to the attention of people more suited to edit this page. 24.254.36.150 (talk) 04:58, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
- Yes some horses can and do produce a "trememdous effort" in racing and other disciplines but perhaps a "trememdous and couragous effort" is a bit over the top, though. Of course there are other horses that do not have the same fighting spirit. I am an Ozzie and listened to the call, and if that jockey had been here I'm sure that the public would have let him know what they thought of him and the task that he set that great mare.Cgoodwin (talk) 06:07, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
- Terms like this are a real issue in a lot of racing articles. Racing journalists fans use this type of language all the time, and sometimes forget how odd it can sound to outsiders. I think the answer is to find the more emotive terms in sources and then use them in quotations. Tigerboy1966 (talk) 14:30, 4 September 2011 (UTC) (duelling down the stretch)
Zenyatta did not win the Breeders Cup Classic in 2010 - she lost to Blame. Corrected. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.2.239.214 (talk) 00:06, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
Discussion
[edit]Phrases like "overwhelmed" and "flying finishes" are more breathless sportswriter prose than encyclopedic language. Plus, a you tube video of one of her races is not a "source." A source has to verify the content, not be something we synthesize ourselves. The ESPN source noted that she was a come-from behind horse and a late closer. the ABR source notes she was slow to get started. You can say those things, you can't use hyperbole. Montanabw(talk) 05:35, 18 February 2016 (UTC)
I'm sorry, I believe you're "wiki-lawyering" here. First, all three sources verify the fact that the horse was a closer, with the clip best illustrating that fact. There's little to synthesize here. Second, there is little wrong with "breathless sportswriter prose" provided it's in small doses. This leads me to my third point...it's ONE SENTENCE in the article. It merely notes the horse's relatively distinct racing style. I'm not looking to change anything else in the article. I find it odd not to mention her racing style in the article.G. - Now that you've toned it down a little and tossed the Youtube clip (as an example in the External links section, it's fine, but it doesn't "prove" the point to someone who doesn't know horse racing...) it's better; I still moved it down, though. And we need to write in an encyclopedic tone; I like her too, but her actions speak for themselves, here we stick to the facts. I'm all for improving the article and adding more material; we just have to keep it from sounding like her web site (which reads like she's a magic unicorn or something... speaking of breathless prose... !) The Zenyatta Collection
[edit]Not sure if it belongs in the wiki article, but thought I'd mention the series of photos taken of Zenyatta by Neil Latham that spawned a fair bit of press. Summarized here: http://www.zenyatta.com/news/the-zenyatta-collection Jlvsclrk (talk) 03:04, 29 July 2016 (UTC)
- Hm... not sure either. But I'm wondering if the "American Thoroughbred" series warrants an article, given the coverage it received (as many RS are linked at that source). Similarly, I wonder if Neil Latham qualifies for an article...? Montanabw(talk) 22:03, 29 July 2016 (UTC)
Lead paragraph should have....................
[edit]At the start of article it should state: 1. That she cost only $60,000 as a yearling at Keeneland. 2. Plus the Total Prize money earned should be at the top. As that's what most people come to her page to look for that info. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.136.154.144 (talk) 11:55, 10 March 2017 (UTC)
