Description

For more details on this topic, see Authority control and Wikipedia:Authority control.

This metadata template links Wikipedia articles to various library catalogue systems, for biographies and other topics.

This template draws most of its values from Wikidata, but they can be overridden by locally entered data. Adding the data to Wikidata is preferable.

An empty instance of this template stays dormant in an article, until values are added to Wikidata, when it will then display them, so this template should be added to all biographies, whether or not there are authority control identifiers in Wikidata already.

User pages

The template may also be placed on user pages, but then data must be entered locally.

Data types

Supported authority files
Virtual International Authority File (VIAF)
Library of Congress Control Number (LCCN)
International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI)
Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID; see also WP:ORCID)
Integrated Authority File (Gemeinsame Normdatei or GND)
LIBRIS by the National Library of Sweden (SELIBR)
University Documentation System of France (Système universitaire de documentation or SUDOC)
National Library of France (Bibliothèque nationale de France or BNF)
Dutch Biography Portal (Biografisch Portaal or BPN)
ResearcherID (RID)
BIBSYS (BIBSYS)
Union List of Artist Names (ULAN)
MusicBrainz Artist ID (MBA)
National Library of Australia (NLA)
National Diet Library (NDL)
... (30+ sources, see "local conf" list at Module:Authority control)
Deprecated
Corporate Bodies Authority File (Gemeinsame Körperschaftsdatei or GKD), now part of GND
Name Authority File (Personennamendatei or PND), now part of GND
Subject Headings Authority File (Schlagwortnormdatei or SWD), now part of GND

Wikidata content is used as fallback for the BNF, BPN, GND, ISNI, LCCN, MBA, NDL, NLA, ORCID, SUDOC, ULAN, and VIAF identifiers.

The template validates digits in many values (such as ISNI, ORCID, SUDOC, etc.) and shows an error if the check fails.

Wherever possible, the template also generates a link to WorldCat Identities, using VIAF or LCCN values.

Position

As a metadata template, the Authority control template should be placed after the external links section and navigation templates, right before the categories.

Usage

As a rule of thumb: (1) insert the empty version, (2) click "Show preview" to see which sources are automatically pulled from Wikidata, (3a) if you know more sources, add them in the template using their named param, (3b) alternatively, consider adding them to the article's "Wikidata item" (so that all versions of Wikipedia will automatically benefit).

Microformat

The template wraps each UID value with the HTML markup: <span class="uid">...</span>, which enables the first-found value to be included in an hCard microformat. For that reason, VIAF, where present, is emitted first.
