Usage

This is a frontend to {{Infobox settlement}} for South African cities, towns and villages.

If the censuscode parameter is added, the infobox is automatically populated with data from the 2011 Census, including:

  • Land area of the town in square kilometres (as defined by Stats SA)
  • Population and population density of the town as of 2011
  • Demographic makeup of the population by race and first language (not available for all towns)

Census codes for towns and smaller settlements can be found by searching at http://census2011.adrianfrith.com/.

With the censuscode parameter, the template will produce a functional infobox, but it is recommended that you also add at least the latitude and longitude of the town, in which case the template will also produce a pushpin map showing the location of the town. You can use other parameters from {{Infobox settlement}} to further populate the template.

Note that this template will create a reference named "Census2011". This can cause errors for duplicate reference definitions if not carefully managed.

Example

The wikicode below produces the infobox shown to the right.

Use without a census code

When the right census code cannot be found, the data from the 2011 census will not be included automatically. The infobox can still be used, but it will require the addition of at least the name of the province and municipality by using the parameters of the same name, entering them without qualifiers or disambiguation, so that Dannhauser Local Municipality, for example, is added to the infobox as just Dannhauser.

Without a census code, land area and population (if available) will have to be added manually. This can be done by using the area_total_km2 and population_total parameters, respectively.
