When used with the "Redirect category shell" (Rcat shell) template:

Template {{Redirect category shell}} may be used to add one or more rcat templates, along with their parameters and categories, to a redirect. For more information see the documentation page below.

When used by itself:

  • To a TV episode list entry: This is a redirect from a television episode title to a list of episodes, a type of article that is a collection of brief descriptions and covers the subject more comprehensively.
    • Links to list entries should use this redirect and should not be piped with the target pagename. This allows "what links here" to be used to identify the links to the individual sections.

Purpose

This redirect category (rcat) template is used to categorize redirects from a television-related title of an episode to a list of episodes, a type of article that is a collection of brief descriptions and covers the subject more comprehensively. Links to list entries should use this redirect and should not be piped with the target pagename. This allows "what links here" to be used to identify the links to the individual sections.

Usage

#REDIRECT [[(target article title)]]

{{Rcat shell|
{{R to TV episode list entry}}
}}
Template {{Rcat shell}} is an alias for the Redirect category shell template, which may be used to add as many appropriate rcats as needed, usually from one to seven, along with their parameters, to a redirect. For more information see the documentation on its template page. This rcat may also tag a redirect individually:
#REDIRECT [[(target article title)]]

{{R to TV episode list entry}}
This is in accord with instructions found at WP:REDCAT.
  • An optional unnamed parameter may be used to supply the name of the TV series in which the redirected episode title is found. This will sort the episode to a more specific category. For example:
{{Rcat shell|
{{R to TV episode list entry|1=Friends}}
}}
or the 1= may be omitted:
{{Rcat shell|
{{R to TV episode list entry|Friends}}
}}
and if used individually:
{{R to TV episode list entry|Friends}}
All the above populate Category:Friends episode redirects to lists.
  • Important note: the very first time that a TV series-specific subcategory is named in the first parameter, that category will appear as a red link (Category:(series name) episode redirects to lists) at the bottom of the redirect page. (If this is not seen or no categories can be seen at the bottom of the page, then be sure your user preferences are set to see hidden categories!) If the category link is red, it means that the category must be created to correctly sort the episode. The category name should be similar to the Friends category just seen:
Category:(series name) episode redirects to lists
The edit page of the new category should be encoded as follows:
{{Redirect category|from=''(series name)'' episodes|template=Rcat shell|parameters=<nowiki>{{</nowiki>[[Template:R to TV episode list entry|R to TV episode list entry]]{{!}}1=(series name)<nowiki>}}</nowiki>}}

[[Category:Episode redirects to lists]]
Insert the series name in two places, shown in parentheses, inside the {{Redirect category}} template. Do not use a pipe symbol ( | ) to separate the rcat from its parameter; use the {{!}} template instead.
Place a message on the talk page if assistance is needed.
  • A second optional unnamed parameter may be used to provide a category sort key for the episode that is redirected. For example:
{{Rcat shell|
{{R to TV episode list entry|1=Stargate Atlantis|2=Hive, The}}
}}
or the 1= and 2= may be omitted:
{{Rcat shell|
{{R to TV episode list entry|Stargate Atlantis|Hive, The}}
}}
and if used individually:
{{R to TV episode list entry|Stargate Atlantis|Hive, The}}
In Category:Stargate Atlantis episode redirects to lists, all three of the above will sort the episode redirect, "The Hive", in alphabetical order by "Hive" ("H") instead of by "The" ("T"). Without the second parameter, the category sort key will be either the redirect page name or the DEFAULTSORT: sort key if set.
For more information about the Rcat shell template, please see the template documentation.
  • Use this rcat to tag any mainspace redirect from a TV episode to a list in which the episode is an entry:
    • if the episode is included in and redirected to a list, either:
      • in an article entitled "List of …", or
      • a section of an article either:
        • titled a list, or
        • containing episode entries that are not themselves sections. Also use {{R to anchor}} where appropriate.
    • for a redirect to an article section about the episode, use {{R to section}}.

Aliases

Printworthiness

  • In main-article namespace, many TV episode redirects to lists are unprintworthy; however, there are many others that are printworthy, so there is no default sort for printworthiness. In 2003, efforts were begun to support the Wikimedia Foundation's goal of increasing access and availability of Wikipedia articles in printed versions. Some rcats automatically populate either Category:Printworthy redirects or Category:Unprintworthy redirects by default. Others, like this rcat, do not, and that means it is up to editors to choose which of those categories, Printworthy or Unprintworthy, is appropriate and should be populated. The rcats that are used separately to populate those categories are:

Examples:
{{Rcat shell|
{{R to TV episode list entry}}
{{R printworthy}}
}}

{{Rcat shell|
{{R to TV episode list entry}}
{{R unprintworthy}}
}}
Either {{Redirect category shell}} or its alias/shortcut, {{Rcat shell}}, may be used.
