Scotland not guaranteed top 3 spot until 7th October[edit]

Currently Scotland have 10 Points, Japan have 8 and USA have 0.

Hypothetical suggestion of results:

  • South Africa - USA: 0-28, USA score 4 tries, 5 Points for USA
  • Samoa - Scotaland: 60-0, Scotaland receive no points
  • USA - Japan: 28-26, both USA and Japan score four tries, 5 points for USA, 2 points for Japan (for scoring four tries and for losing by less than seven points).

These scores would result in Scotland, USA and Japan all being tied on 10 points. As this tie consists of three teams, according to the tie-breaking criteria, we look at the score difference.

  • Scotland: -20
  • USA: -2
  • Japan: -14

Result: 2nd USA, 3rd Japan, 4th Scotland.

Is a result like this likely, no, but it's mathematically possible, and so we can't say that is guaranteed 3rd place. Although, with that being said, I'd put my money on South Africa beating the USA.

USA cannot qualify but could still get 3rd place[edit]

If the USA were to get maximum of 5 points in each of its remaining matches, it would have 10 points. It would then be second equal in the group. Assuming neither Scotland nor SA get further points, it would tie-break with Scotland. The result of its match with Scotland would decide it, which Scotland won. So the USA cannot qualify.
