Template talk:Incomplete

For whole pages or for sections?[edit]

The text of the template says that the label is for a "section" not for an "article". Therefore, I'm going to re-establish the redirect that Grutness initially put in place. Courtland 14:18, 2005 May 16 (UTC)

TfD debate[edit]

This template was nominated for deletion at TFD, but during the discussion its original intent was pointed out and restored. The template was kept as a result. The discussion may be found here. -Splashtalk 23:39, 18 September 2005 (UTC)

Text[edit]

I'll change the text of the template from "This article is incomplete and is confusing." to "This article is incomplete." since it's an "incomplete" template. I have found some incomplete articles that are not exactly confusing but need certain sections, so I decided to let you know here. -- Kripkenstein τ κ

Should be deleted[edit]

In its current state this is completely worthless, and does nothing but make a mess of the pages to which it is added. The text, "this article or section is incomplete and may require expansion and/or cleanup," is so vague and inclusive that it applies to virtually all wikipedia articles. I agree. Plese add: {{Tfd|Incomplete}}. I've created a TfD discussion already: Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2010_November_9 Tijfo098 (talk) 00:49, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

Edit request from , 13 November 2011[edit]

I believe the current wording suffers from redundancy. I am sure nobody will (or should) put this template on a section which is incomplete but he does not want it to be complete! Also I am sure no one will (or should) put this template on an article or section that is complete but requires cleanup! (We have other cleanup templates for that.)

I propose this sentence:

This {{{1|article}}} '''is incomplete and may require expansion or [[Wikipedia:Cleanup|cleanup]]'''.

...should be changed into:

This {{{1|article}}} '''is incomplete'''. Fleet Command (talk) 07:22, 13 November 2011 (UTC)

Request[edit]

The TFD template needs to be removed since the previous TFD was closed as no consensus. Ten Pound Hammer(What did I screw up now?) 05:47, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

Have a look at the source code - the TFD template isn't included directly here. It's transcluded through {{expand further}} so that template would need to be edited if you want to noinclude the TFD template. But I'm not sure if that would be a good idea since the outcome of that TFD would affect this template. Tra (Talk) 15:16, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

Request documentation[edit]

The documentation should be restored. This used to have template documentation, and now there's some weird documentation that isn't using standard documentation syntax, so the old documentation should be restored. 70.49.124.225 (talk) 04:44, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

editrequest[edit]

Please add the parameter "|small=" to the options list. This will allow section-sizing the template

Add the line after "| issue= is incomplete." on a new line:

| small = {{#switch: {{lc: {{{1}}} }} | section | table = left | #default = {{{small|}}} }}

-- 76.65.128.43 (talk) 06:24, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

Why is an option required here? In general, cleanup templates intended for mainspace either use the small style (as in {{expand section}}) or they do not. It's not obvious that we need to allow editors the choice. If the small size has consensus then it should probably just replace the current one. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 14:55, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
This template is used for sections, so the line listed, will style it like {{expand section}} when used in conjunction with a provided input "section". The size will depend on if it is an article (full size) or section (section sized) -- 76.65.128.43 (talk) 00:11, 11 January 2013 (UTC)
I understand shrinking it where sect is section or table: I don't understand the additional override in the #default statement. Is it only supposed to be used on talk pages? Nevertheless I've pushed for now, though I may add namespace detection for the use of {{{small}}} if it's getting used on articles. Redo category's[edit]

Hi can we please redo the category's so that if someone was to include this template in an article it would automatically add that article to the category so it is easer for people to find it and expand it or update it. 176.250.150.202 (talk) 12:30, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

Complete[edit]

Which Wikipedia articles are complete? How do we know they are complete? Hyacinth (talk) 03:09, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

Inconsistent text[edit]

The start of the text takes note of parameter {{{1}}}, but since the edits of 13 March 2014, the next part says "Please help to improve the section", making ihe text inconsistent when the tag is placed at the top of an article. Please could that part also act on {{{1}}}. Thanks. --Stfg (talk) 08:30, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

@Stfg: I agree that having a template that states "This article is incomplete. Please help to improve the section..." is inconsistent. To avoid redundancy, I suggest we use This {{{1|section or list}}} '''is incomplete'''. Please help to improve it... What do you think? GoingBatty (talk) 01:48, 19 August 2014 (UTC)
@GoingBatty: yes, that looks good. Thanks very much. --Stfg (talk) 09:10, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

Red question icon with gradient background.svg Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format. (and for the future, please remember that a detailed description of the requested edit must follow the edit-request template.) – Paine Ellsworth CLIMAX! 12:44, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

Sorry I wasn't clear. Per the conversation above, please change:

This {{{1|section or list}}} '''is incomplete'''. Please help to improve the section,

to

This {{{1|section or list}}} '''is incomplete'''. Please help to improve it,

Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 13:16, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

Yes check.svg Done But even better than pasting bits of code into the talk page is to edit the template's sandbox; that way, we can see exactly what changes are intended, compare current to proposed, and test them side by side, see WP:TESTCASES. --Redrose64 (talk) 15:44, 19 August 2014 (UTC)
@Redrose64: Thanks for updating the template. Paine's suggestion above didn't make it clear that updating the sandbox was also necessary when making a simple "change X to Y" request. GoingBatty (talk) 16:38, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

Template-protected edit request on 24 August 2014[edit]

Dear whoever protected this template,

When I put "{{incomplete|reason=there is an inadequate amount of information in the article|date=August 2014}}" the problem message should say "This article is incomplete. This is because there is an inadequate amount of information. (August 2014)"

I hope this suggestion will become in reality.

Qwertyxp2000 (talk) 06:40, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

@Clownkrusty: It's not clear what you want. Per the section immediately above, don't paste bits of code into the talk page - instead, edit the template's sandbox; that way, we can see exactly what changes are intended, compare current to proposed, and test them side by side, see WP:TESTCASES. --Redrose64 (talk) 16:22, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

See my next talk.

Qwertyxp2000 (talk) 08:27, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

This template could do with some reasons. I want an added reason template to show what the incompleteness of an article is.

Qwertyxp2000 (talk) 08:21, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

Please do not drop code blobs on the talk page - put the amendment in the template's sandbox. --Redrose64 (talk) 13:12, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

Oh, the above is what I want to think should happen. I made this in that sandbox you were saying. Qwertyxp2000 (talk) 05:33, 31 May 2015 (UTC)

@Qwertyxp2000: Like code blobs, demonstrations also do not belong on the talk page. Nine months ago I gave you a link to WP:TESTCASES which explains that demonstrations belong at Template talk:Incomplete/testcases. You also do not need to keep creating more sections for an unresolved issue, just add more information to the existing section. --Redrose64 (talk) 14:28, 3 June 2015 (UTC)

Please change this template from the current template to the one on the sandbox. I think I have got the right code for what I wanted. In this case, when using the "reason" template attribute making it say "The reason is...". Qwertyxp2000 (talk) 05:37, 31 May 2015 (UTC)

There was support for this at the last TfD, so Yes check.svg Done. Please update the documentation. Alakzi (talk) 18:30, 31 May 2015 (UTC)

The normal "incomplete" template still says "section"[edit]

"This article is incomplete. Please help to improve the section, or discuss the issue on the talk page." --LKAvn (talk) 09:08, 15 June 2015 (UTC)

Done The instructions at #Inconsistent text were incomplete - another reason why sandboxing is always a good idea for explaining desired template amendments. --Redrose64 (talk) 11:38, 15 June 2015 (UTC)

Template-protected edit request on 20 November 2015: Image[edit]

Consider adding to this template this image: Wiki letter w.svg, which represents that something needs to be completed. Gamingforfun365 (talk) 03:46, 20 November 2015 (UTC)

These kind of templates don't usually have additional images. You'll need to get a consensus before we can make a change. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:55, 20 November 2015 (UTC)

Template-protected edit request on 24 May 2016[edit]

Please change {{#if:{{{reason|}}}|This is because {{{reason}}}.}} to {{#if:{{{reason|}}}|This is because '''{{{reason}}}'''.}} This will help to bold what is specifically in issue. Qwertyxp2000 (talk | contribs) 07:31, 24 May 2016 (UTC)

That would be a lot of bold in one template. I'm inclined to decline. Have you discussed this change with any others? Do you have consensus for the change? — Andy W. (talk ·ctb) 07:34, 24 May 2016 (UTC)
@Andy M. Wang: Well, many of the descriptions are just short-ish. What examples of templates of templates with the reason parameter have you seen with large descriptions? Qwertyxp2000 (talk | contribs)
What other reasons, other than "that is a lot of bold". I can see it is a lot of bold, but I do feel that many of the reason descriptions are just around 50 or so characters long. Qwertyxp2000 (talk | contribs) 07:40, 24 May 2016 (UTC)
@Qwertyxp2000: I've mocked up a change that I'm personally suggesting. Let me know if you have any feedback. Also, I'm not willing to make a change in the next half day or so. Want to give a few others a chance to take a look at this and comment, if you don't mind. Thanks — Andy W. (talk ·ctb) 07:42, 24 May 2016 (UTC)
I've tweaked the mock to pull the rest of the line into the if statement, which allows for bolding of the "is incomplete" should "reason" not exist. --Izno (talk) 07:49, 24 May 2016 (UTC)
@Qwertyxp2000: I noticed that you manually bolded one of your reasons when you applied the template. Leaving the reason unbolded allows editors a bit more room to customize, as you did. Implementing this change might break your scenario. — Andy W. (talk ·ctb) 07:53, 24 May 2016 (UTC)
@Andy M. Wang: Ah, that is a good point. What about adding examples of customisation on the what-to-do-with-template-thing? Qwertyxp2000 (talk | contribs) 08:10, 24 May 2016 (UTC)
@Andy M. Wang: Solved. And I will be adding this thing on the what-to-do-with-template template. Qwertyxp2000 (talk | contribs) 08:11, 24 May 2016 (UTC)
What do you think about my edit to the documentation (that is what I meant by the what-to-do-with-template template)? Qwertyxp2000 (talk | contribs) 08:15, 24 May 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, looks all right. I unbolded 1 example for the sake of variety. — Andy W. (talk ·ctb) 17:25, 24 May 2016 (UTC)
