Infobox header colors[edit]

It's obvious that this infobox was copied from {{Infobox Football European Championship}} and I have no problem about it. I just wanted to say that I was the one that chose the header colors (dark blue, red, orange) and it was not a random choice — they are the colors present in UEFA's emblem. While these are justified in {{Infobox Football European Championship}}, they lose their significance in this more general football infobox.

Perhaps neutral colors should be chosen for this one. Paruta(l)kupiu 18:53, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, at the time, Template:Infobox Asian Cup, Template:Infobox Copa América and Template:Infobox Football European Championship all used the same as I used here but I could care less about the colors so change to the consensus.--otduff t/c 22:31, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
But you can check by their history that {{Infobox Asian Cup}} and {{Infobox Copa América}} were created after I restyled {{Infobox Football European Championship}} and added those colors, so whoever copied the infobox code didn't have a clue about the color choices. Anyway, I just wanted to suggest a change, nothing else. I'm open for suggestions. Paruta(l)kupiu 23:57, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Categories[edit]

Does this template have to include the article in categories automatically? I find it really annoying myself. – PeeJay 16:20, 20 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Infobox International Football Competition (future event)[edit]

I've just noticed the creation of this template - thought I would point out my comment at Template talk:Infobox International Football Competition (future event) here, as the page probably doesn't get much traffic. -- Chuq (talk) 23:45, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

To whoever is currently updating this template[edit]

Don't forget that women and clubs compete in international tournaments so only offering the basic champions etc entries wrapped in {{fb}} will be (and is) useless for a lot of the inclusions of this template. It's just started to break when using {{fbw}} and domestic teams. Nanonic (talk) 00:19, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed. Use |champion_other=, |second_other=, |third_other= and |fourth_other= parameters for any teams that are not in the {{fb}} template. Note that if you just use the |champion= parameter, you should only specify the country, and it will be automatically wrapped into {{fb}} template, but if you use the |champion_other= parameter, be sure to enter your own code (e.g. {{fbw|Germany}} to produce  Germany.  ARTYOM  09:55, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That works fine, thanks very much. Nanonic (talk) 12:18, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No problem!  ARTYOM  12:31, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Request for small change[edit]

I've never been a fan of table text like this with text-align:center, I just think it looks bad. Would it be ok to change text-align:center; cellpadding=0 to text-align:left; cellpadding=2 I think (if ofc the cellpadding dont screw anything up) it would look nicer. Chandlertalk 01:49, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

And forgot one thing... I think it would be a good thing to have a "Final venue" also, and more stuff that can fit National and continental club competitions Chandlertalk 02:09, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I incorporated your first suggestion into the copy of this template at my sandbox, and I personally think it really looks better. Regarding the second proposal, it's a good one as well, but we should probably discuss what information to add.  ARTYOM  13:01, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, the second proposal was just when I was adding the template to some Uefa Champions League seasons, it's not totally needed, but if you'd go "all the way" to make this template to work and be used by all football competitions (would be good for standardization, right?) it couldn't hurt with more options. Chandlertalk 13:43, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Request for flags[edit]

Just like to make a request to whoever updated this infobox. I was just editing the page for Europeada 2008 and, as you'd see there, there is a problem with the flags for this tournament. I added the flags from the country the team is based on, or the team itself if possible. I was wondering if it is possible to add the Roma flag to the database for this? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Roma_flag.svg) Thanks Lihaas (talk) 11:04, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Best player[edit]

I think this is a very weak term to use, better would be Player of the Tournament, which I think is how Xavi was designated for UEFA Euro 2008. Dancarney (talk) 09:17, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not working[edit]

Can anyone explain why the Dates and Country parameters are not working? Digirami (talk) 16:47, 11 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Propose adding "next" and "previous"[edit]

Would anyone object to me adding "next" and "previous" parameters to the bottom of this infobox, similar to those at the bottom of Template:Infobox football tournament season? --Jameboy (talk) 21:45, 4 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

YEARR[edit]

What was "yearr" used for? 117.0.120.175 (talk) 00:19, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It was used to place the year to the right of the competition name. It would therefore produce "FIFA World Cup 2010", for example, rather than "2010 FIFA World Cup". – PeeJay 11:53, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Propose adding "Semi-finalists"[edit]

In UEFA Euro championships, there is no match for the 3rd place. I therefore think there should be a semi-finalists located just below Runners-up to show the two teams that have reached the semi-final. --Tim42 (talk) 21:05, 12 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

@Cabayi: I totally agree with this. I just came to demand adding that possibility, since as the user above said there is no 3rd or 4th place in the European Championships, but only semi-finalists. Would please someone add the parameter as 'seminfinal1' and 'semifinal2', as can be seen in the documentation view of the template? Thanks in advance. Akocsg (talk) 03:32, 25 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree. The only time third place is important is when the Olympics give out their bronze medals. Unless the competition has a third place playoff to determine an outright third place team, I don’t think there’s any point mentioning any teams that didn’t reach the final in the infobox. – PeeJay 19:23, 25 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Cities field[edit]

City is a designation the meaning of which varies widely. In the UK, it only applies to urbanisations that have a Royal Charter; traditionally it refers to towns that have a cathedral; in the US it seems (underinformed outsider alert) to be applied to communities no mater how small that lay claim to such a title; in loose generalisation it tends to mean a town big enough to have suburban centres. In relation to this template, it invites edits such as this: slightly pedantic, perhaps, but perfectly accurate. The problem is, of course, that other terms are either equally subject to variety of interpretation (e.g. Towns: but London/Paris/New York etc are not legally constituted as towns), or are far outside normal use: Urbanisations etc.

Any solutions? (in the specific example posted above, I ignored the cities field, and added the text in 7 municipalities to the venues field, but that does not address the essential issue) Kevin McE (talk) 09:31, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

MoS compliance[edit]

Display of host flag disabled per Manual of Style: Generally, flag icons should not be used in infoboxes, even when there is a "country", "nationality" or equivalent field: they are unnecessarily distracting and give undue prominence to one field among many.

Flag icons should only be inserted in infoboxes in those cases where they convey information in addition to the text. Flag icons are visually distracting in infoboxes and lead to unnecessary disputes when over-used. Kevin McE (talk) 20:49, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Overlink[edit]

The template is currently going against WP:OVERLINK and should be changed. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 06:50, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No opposition so I made the change. The countries should probably be comma separated or possibly an unbulleted list. Walter Görlitz (talk) 22:17, 1 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Improving with a bit more statistical data[edit]

Hi All!
I think this template should be improved with some interesting data which are included in {{Infobox football league season}}:

| biggest home win =
| biggest away win =
| highest scoring =
| highest attendance =
| lowest attendance =
| average attendance =

I think the streak info are not so important, because in a short tournament there should be lot of tie in these categories, but the template maz be conatin them also:

| longest wins =
| longest unbeaten =
| longest winless =
| longest losses =

Flags in infoboxes[edit]

Hello. For some additional information, I come here to tell you the information. The flags in the 2011 AFC Asian Cup and the 2015 AFC Asian Cup had apparently appeared on the infobox of this competition. They are used within the template  Qatar and  Australia. The question is: should I remove these templates in these infoboxes, or keep these in the infoboxes? If you have the answer, please leave a reply. Thanks for the help. --108.54.86.32 (talk) 20:50, 8 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Plurals[edit]

The infobox lists fields for "champions" and "runners-up", but in all cases the competitor is an individual team - which is by definition singular. Therefore, shouldn't these fields be singular too - "champion" and "runner-up"? (See, for example, Merriam-Webster's definition and Wiktionary concurs too). Wittylama 22:52, 20 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Depends on which variant of English the template is written in, Teams can be plural in British English. See Comparison of American and British English#Formal and notional agreement. Nanonic (talk) 22:57, 20 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Template-protected edit request on 29 August 2018[edit]

Pursuant to the discussion at Category talk:Articles which use infobox templates with no data rows#Categorisation, I've been looking for templates which are unnecessarily populating the tracking category. It's quite common for this template to be used with only the parameters "prevseason" or "nextseason" (usually both) so the infobox can be used for navigation. But that case triggers the "no data rows" condition. The other parameters that populate data rows are all explicitly "optional". Since this is a common and accepted use, I want to add |decat=yes to the call to the infobox module. I've already done this at Infobox_cricket_tournament Diff/856345363 and I'm just applying the same approach to other templates as I discover them. Other examples where similar template-protected edit requests have been successfully made are at award and sports competition.

After line 106, near the bottom, which looks like:

| below = {{#if:{{{prevseason|}}}|{{align|left|← {{{prevseason|}}} }}}}{{#if:{{{nextseason|}}}|{{align|right|{{{nextseason|}}} → }}}}

please add the following line:

| decat = {{#if:{{{prevseason|}}}{{{nextseason|}}}|yes|no}}

Thanks. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 05:21, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Template-protected edit request on 24 January 2019[edit]

In every FIFA World Cup opening ceremony, like the Olympics, a person had declared the world cup opened. For example in the recent World Cup held last year, Putin had opened up the world cup at the Opening ceremony. Can you please put officially opened in the template? Thanks. RainbowSilver2ndBackup (talk) 18:55, 24 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{edit template-protected}} template. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:10, 24 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • There is a related field in {{Infobox Olympic games}}. I could see arguments to include it in competitions like the FIFA World Cup, but it makes no sense in the broader use of this template. Walter Görlitz (talk) 19:31, 24 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'd disagree, the opening ceremony of the Olympics is far more formal than the World Cup. This can be mentioned in prose, but isn't noteworthy enough for the infobox. S.A. Julio (talk) 19:46, 24 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I agree with S.A. Julio. The World Cup's opening ceremony is barely remembered at all, let alone the person who declares the tournament open! – PeeJay 20:01, 24 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Flagicon on non-{{fb|}}[edit]

Would you :@Walter Görlitz: please add flagvar for non-senior teams, used for instance on Paraguay in 2001 FIFA World Youth Championship (| fourth_other-flagvar) and Japan in 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship (| second_other-flagvar)? For others, please add | champion_other-flagvar and | third_other-flagvar. Thanks. – Flix11 (talk) 06:10, 25 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Flix11: An infobox parameter isn't necessary, in this case the flag variant parameter has to be passed directly to the {{fbu}} template. S.A. Julio (talk) 08:59, 25 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Oh ya, forgot that. Thanks Julio! :) – Flix11 (talk) 09:02, 25 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Format description[edit]

How about adding a parameter for some text to briefly describe the format of the tournament? For the latest or the forthcoming World Cup that could be, "group stage of eight round-robin groups of four teams each; winners and runners-up advance to a knockout stage". For a Premier League season, "double round-robin competition". As a parallel, Template:Infobox flag has a parameter for a "concise description of the design", although detailed flags such as that of Turkmenistan may necessitate longer texts. --Theurgist (talk) 02:32, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I could have sworn we had something like that already. Nevertheless, I'm not sure it's needed. The specific format of the tournament isn't relevant enough for the infobox, IMO. – PeeJay 10:48, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Use proper lists[edit]

The "Host countries" field constructs a <br />-separated list. Per MOS:PLIST this is an accessibility error; it should use genuine list markup instead, using a template such as {{plainlist}} or {{unbulleted list}}. Hairy Dude (talk) 05:20, 30 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Hairy Dude: Any suggestion on what the code is that is causing this and how to correct it? Walter Görlitz (talk) 02:43, 1 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The bit starting with: | data2 = {{#if:{{{country|}}}|{{{country}}}}}<!-- -->{{#if:{{{country2|}}}|<br />{{{country2|}}}}}<!--
Add {{unbulleted list| to the start of this; replace the <br />s with |1=, |2=, etc.; and add }} to the end. Optionally make the beginning and end conditional on country2 being non-empty so a single entry isn't a list. Hairy Dude (talk) 16:36, 1 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Let's include the word "football"[edit]

Hi, the template is very useful but it never says we're talking about football: a non-expert who checks the instance for the Euro 2022 for example might not understand immediately what sport is the event about. Can we change the words "Tournament details" to "Football tournament details"? Thanks --Larry.europe (talk) 18:19, 14 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

That would make its use impossible in locations where the term used is not "football" such as the United States, Canada, Australia, etc. Walter Görlitz (talk) 00:17, 20 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The "Top scorer(s)" field should list the Golden Boot winner, not whoever's tied on most goals[edit]

The template currently lists "top scorer(s)", which seems to be a relic from the time tournaments didn't tie-break goals scored when handing out the Golden Boot award. There are now also 2nd and 3rd place awards in this area. As far as I can tell, this change happened around 10 years ago.

For example, in Euro 2012, Fernando Torres won the Golden Boot, Mario Gomez won the Silver Boot, and Alan Dzagoev won the Bronze boot. All had three goals; they were tie-broken by assists, and then by minutes played. Similarly, in Euro 2020, Ronaldo and Schick both scored 5 goals, but Ronaldo received the Golden Boot due to his single assist.

I propose that the infobox guidance be modified to reflect that modern tournaments give the Golden Boot award (sometimes called Golden Shoe, Top Scorer, Best Goalscorer, etc.) to one recipient, using tie-breaking criteria such as assists and minutes played. For tournaments with single Golden Boot winners, the infobox field should *only* list the winner of the Golden Boot; the Silver and Bronze Boot award winners should listed in another section of the article, in the same way the Silver Ball and Bronze Ball players are listed elsewhere *but* the Golden Ball winner is listed under "Best player(s)".

It is also possible that there are two Golden Boot winners - they'd need to be tied on goals, assists, minutes played, qualification goals and possibly other criteria. It's highly unlikely, though. Kronix1986 (talk) 21:06, 1 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The parameter is for the top scorers, not the Golden Boot winners. We shouldn't be preferring one top scorer over another because they happened to be better than the other player in a separate statistical category. The awards section at the bottom of an article should be enough acknowledgement for a player who won the Golden Boot. – PeeJay 22:26, 1 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It seems you didn't understand my post. I proposed that, for modern tournaments, the infobox field for "top scorer(s)" reflects that the Golden Boot award is no longer shared. That is now the norm for cups big and small, at least in UEFA and FIFA tournaments. For past tournaments, the "top scorer" designation was given to the player(s) with the most goals. For modern tournaments, the "top scorer" designation is given to one player except in the unlikely scenario they're tied on goals, assists, minutes played, and qualification goals.
It ultimately doesn't matter what we think; UEFA themselves consider Ronaldo to be the top scorer of UEFA 2020 because he was given the Golden Boot, just as they consider Donnarumma to be the best player because he received the Golden Ball. The infobox for football tournaments should reflect this. Kronix1986 (talk) 23:26, 1 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Just because they use a set of arcane criteria to break ties doesn't mean we should. By reducing the infobox to just "the player who won the award because UEFA said so", you're depriving the readers of the more important aspect, which is that more than one player scored the most goals at the tournament. – PeeJay 16:17, 2 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
What about competitions not run by UEFA or FIFA? There are many that are run by leagues and other that are run independently (although, always under the watchful eye of FIFA). It may make sense to have an override parameter where we could change the label to "golden boot", or a new parameter just for golden boot. Walter Görlitz (talk) 10:29, 5 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Attendance[edit]
