Claims on Metropolitan Area[edit]

Moved from User talk:Vensatry: for a wider discussion --DBigXray 10:26, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
A metropolitan area should have a minimum population of 4 million.
— -Vensatry on TfD

On TfD you have said the above statement, Can you please point me to the source where this comes from ? thanks--DBigXray 14:05, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

The article itself. Vensatry (Ping me) 15:05, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
Which article says that "A metropolitan area should have a minimum population of 4 million."? --DBigXray 15:11, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
List of most populous metropolitan areas in India Vensatry (Ping me) 15:22, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
I had a look at the above article and the sources also, the sources do not say that 4 million is the criteria for identification of a "metropolitan" city, please correct me if i am missing something.--DBigXray 15:27, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
I think you missed the second para of The Hindu article. Vensatry (Ping me) 15:34, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
But if only the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation area is to be taken into account, the city's population at 35 lakhs falls below the qualifying mark of four millions to be recognised as a mega city.

This says mega city, i dont think it means a Metropolitan city, seems like WP:SYNTHESIS ?? --DBigXray 15:44, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

What's a Mega city then? You might find a discussion in the talk page of the article. If Muzaffarnagar is a metropolitan area, hundreds of areas in India can be designated as metros. Vensatry (Ping me) 15:50, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
As wiki editors its not our job to bother if hundreds of cities get metro status or not, But we must have an official guideline to follow which city we are going to call as a metro city, editors cannot give (or take away) the metro title to a city, simply based on their likeness. I am not trying to support Cents here, I am trying to get a consensus for the template, so first we need to decide what a metroploitan city is, lets find some sources for that to help the discussion.--DBigXray 15:53, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
With this edit an editor has improved the source which is from Constitution and it says "more than 10 million to be called a metro." --DBigXray 22:45, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

Regions in the template[edit]

Resolved: After discussion at User talk:25 Cents FC Regions have been removed and replaced with Divisions of Uttar Pradesh--DBigXray 07:30, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

I am not sure if the regions here are official regions or POV regions as a TfD contributor has pointed out. can we have some source for this to verify.--DBigXray 10:32, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

I think its best to remove them. ♛♚★Vaibhav Jain★♚♛ Talk Email 10:37, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
Agree These are proposed regions and have no administrative significance at present. using them will be WP:SPECULATION. we do not have reliable sources claiming the existence of these regions so it's best to delete them. --DBigXray 12:01, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

Possible renaming[edit]

I think this template above needs a proper renaming, as some members have suggested on TfD. Kindly suggest appropriate names.--DBigXray 10:32, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

He's correct, renaming will be more appropriate --25 CENTS VICTORIOUS 11:32, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
Major cities? On what basis you define a city to be a major one. The title doesn't fit into NPOV. Vensatry (Ping me) 11:41, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
That explains why this proposed title does not have support.--DBigXray 05:40, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
Agree , this title is better for the article in its current form.--DBigXray 11:58, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
Agree Mee to.I already mentioned on what basis cities are titled major or metro on template deletion page--25 CENTS VICTORIOUS 11:59, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
Agree Anir1uph | talk | contrib 15:56, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────You haven't got my point yet. What is the criteria for choosing the "most populated cities". Where do you draw the line between major and minor cities. Vensatry (Ping me) 17:17, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

There is no major/minor in the title, its few most populated cities at the moment--DBigXray 17:34, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
What is the minimum limit (of population) that you've taken for including the cities. Vensatry (Ping me) 18:49, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
The suggested title is still not clear. Even if we fix the minimum population of a Metropolitan area to be one million, we'll have only six cities. Vensatry (Ping me) 18:51, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
As per the new source here A city needs 10 million population to be called as a Metropolitan area. So we have dropped the word Metropolitan altogether. The Title that has been suggested is Most populated cities of Uttar Pradesh and the consensus agrees for this title.--DBigXray 19:09, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
Come on man! Did you really get my point? Vensatry (Ping me) 19:16, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
Are you trying to say we should only have 6 cities in this template ? --DBigXray 19:26, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────If you choose the title "Metropolitan" we'll have only six cities. But what is the criteria that you've taken for the "Most populated cities". Kanpur has a population of 2.9 million and I can very well say that to be a highly populated city. On the other hand I can also say Muzaffarnagar to be one of the most populated cities in UP. Likewise, some other user may also want to include his favourite town. Vensatry (Ping me) 19:33, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

The idea is to have a list of few major cities of UP based on population, can you suggest a better name ? --DBigXray 19:37, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
