Not sure why this template is needed since it is perfectly acceptable to use a foreign language source as a reference, I imagine there are thousands and thousands used. In addition, how exactly would a person go about translating a source?--Jac16888Talk 02:41, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

See WP:NONENG. Wtmitchell (talk) (earlier Boracay Bill) 22:31, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

From the history of the article:

  • 22:45, 20 December 2010‎ Bsherr (The issue is one of verification, which is already covered. Redirecting.)
  • 08:10, 10 February 2012‎ PBS (reverting last edit. This template of one like it is needed for WP:NONENG)

Bsherr redirected this template to {{Verify source}}. I do not think that is the correct think to do because this is not just a general case of verification but a specific one. If {{verify source}} is used on a foreign language source someone who is fluent in the language may check the sources see that the information in the preceding sentence(s) is supported by the source without realising that what is being requested is referring to WP:NONENG. There is no point having a section in the Verification policy called Non-English sources and not having an in-line template to deal with in-line citations that do not meet policy. -- PBS (talk) 08:22, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

Hidden category[edit]

The template documentation says that Category:Sources needing translation is a WP:Hidden category. However, it wasn't actually hidden. Therefore, I have made these changes. But if the category should not be hidden, I can undo the action and then change the documentation instead. Senator2029 (talk) 13:38, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

When to use this template?[edit]

It redirects to Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English, which is hardly helpful. WP:NOENG - which is all the usage guidelines we have here - doesn't discuss it. And the name is not intuitive. It seems to suggest that we need to translate the original source, which is clearly something that is not required by any policies. Looking at the usage in the Geochang massacre, which was bombed by this template a while back, I think it was used there to suggest that we translate the source title into English. As such, I'd propose to rename it to "source title needs translations". We could probably make this template accept few other keywords, like author or publisher, too. I am open to other suggestions, but as it is, this template needs help. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 03:31, 15 June 2015 (UTC)
