Category transclusion[edit]

Currently this template is applying the category Category:Unite the Right rally to any page using it. This was fine so long as the template was being used only on pages appropriate to the category. As per the result of a 2020 discussion, this specifically excludes any bios. A few days ago, however, Sahaib added this template to a number of relevant bios, so we’ve become in violation of that consensus. It seems that we should do one of two things:

  1. Remove the category tag from the template so that it is not transcluded, and re-add the category tag locally to each non-bio article.
  2. Undo Sahaib’s edits, removing the template from any biographies.

As I noted back in 2020, I have no objection to relevant bios being connected to this topic via navbox, so I am open to either course. Other editors who opined back in 2020 might be more attuned to policy nuances than I am, though, so I’m pinging those who voted to purge bios from the category. Thanks for the ping and ensuring we don't backdoor our way into WP:PERFCAT. Solution #1 would follow the CFD consensus with the least impact. (I'm less familiar with template guidelines though so am open to other viewpoints.) - RevelationDirect (talk) 00:07, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Agree with RD, moreover it is just generally not a good idea to add category tags in a template. There are usually individual exceptions when a template is ok while a category tag is not. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:53, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

 Done Seems like this was pretty open-and-shut; thanks for the consult. jameslucas ▄▄▄ ▄ ▄▄▄ ▄▄▄ ▄ 12:30, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
