The Wakes are a folk rock band from Glasgow, Scotland.[1] The band's sound is a mixture of Celtic traditional music fused with punk rock and funk. The band's lyrics embrace their culture, heritage and surroundings. They cover all manner of subjects from anti-fascist politics,[2][3] immigration[1] and unemployment to uprising and rebellion in Scotland, Ireland and beyond. Musical influences include The Pogues, Dick Gaughan, The Clash, Dropkick Murphys and Bob Dylan.[1]
History
The Wakes continue to perform throughout the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe.[1][4][5] In 2008, the group wrote "The Pirates of the League" about the cult German football club FC St Pauli.[6] The club and supporters trusts has since used the song on various releases and The Wakes have played at the home stadium of FC St. Pauli—Millerntor-Stadion—in Hamburg, Germany.[1][7][8]
In 2010, R2 Rock & Reel magazine awarded their album No Irish Need Apply four out of five stars stars,[1] and their 2013 follow up The Red and The Green was awarded the same rating by the publication.
In 2013, the band made their debut performance at the Glasgow international folk festival Celtic Connections.[3]
