Thiruvottriyur (Tamil: திருவொற்றியூர்) (also called Thiruvotriyur or 'TVT') is located within the city premises of Chennai. It is located to the north of Chennai. Due to its proximity to Parrys and Chennai Central, it is fast becoming a sought after residential destination. Tiruvottriyur which is one of the oldest habitations by the sea, has a diverse residential population due to the industrial units, trading activity and nearby fishing hamlets. The area is easily accessible by Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses from across the city and has a bus terminus. The area is also served by Tiruvottiyur railway station of the Chennai Suburban Railway Network.

Thiruvottiyur was widely inhabited even before Chennai was formed. Thiruvottiyur is home to the ancient Thyagaraja Temple, Tiruvottiyur (one of the Paadal Petra Sthalangal and amongst the great Shiva Temples of Tamil Nadu) and location of the samādhi of saint Pattinathar. This temple was visited by many saints and poets like Appar, Sundarar, Gnana Sambandhar, Thyagayyar, Vallalar, Valmiki, Kambar, Adi Shankara etc. Kamba Ramayanam was composed here at Thyagaraja Swamy Vadivudaiamman Temple, before it was recited at Sri Rangam, Trichy

Geography

Tiruvottiyur is located at 13°10′N 80°18′E / 13.16°N 80.3°E / 13.16; 80.3.[1] Its an esplanade located on the shores of Bay of Bengal. The sea encroachment was a major problem for the fishermen before building of Groynes was started in 2004. The groynes, put up over a length of four km, vary in length from 165–300 metres each. Their height is four meters above the mean sea level. After a few years some acres have been reclaimed with the formation of a beach as predicted.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Tiruvottiyur had a population of 211,768. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Tiruvotriyur has an average literacy rate of 77%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 82%, and female literacy is 71%. In Tiruvottiyur, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

During 2001-2011, the population of Tiruvottiyur rose to 248,059, registering a decadal growth of 17 percent.[3]

Thiruvottiyur is one of the heavily populated locations in chennai.It is a very active locality as it is surrounded by huge Industrial establishments namely Royal Enfield Motors,Greaves Cotton LTD,CPCL,SRF,Ashok leyland,Ennore foundaries,ETPS and Lot more.Also the city is supported by numerous Small scale industries.Majority of he city´s population are reliant on these industries for their daily labor.Apart from Industries the Other primary source of income for the people is business and fishing industry is also huge. The city has basically all the facilities a dedicated police station,Post office,Railway station,Bus terminus and even a magistrate court.Entertainment in the city is not much developed compared to other parts of chennai.Lot of theatres have been converted to real estate properties and just two are operational as of now MSM & Odiyanmani.But the locality is well known for its food.There are lots of small and large scale hotels, Restaurants and Small food stalls distributed across the place,Quite famous are Kurunji Hotel,Tirumala Hotel ,Rajeswari Hotel,Pushpa Hotel,Tirupathi Mess & MGR Unavvagam.There is also a small park with a swimming pool as a part of entertainment.Also the city is known for its marriage halls.The city is supported by a huge vegetable & meat market for daily grocery needs and couple of super markets (More & JK).Thiruvottiyur is considered as one of the economical housing zones in chennai.The city is slowly developing in par with rest of the localities in chennai. Road

Thiruvottiyur MTC Bus Depot Formed in 1975 in Ajax,There are buses operated from here to all over chennai & also few limited services which run to various parts of the Tamilnadu state. There is a bus available from paris corner for atleast every 10 mins coming through various routes.Also the city is supported by good amount of auto rickshaws & share autos.Due to the delay in Road widening project, traffic congestion is common in Theradi during peak hours.

Rail

Thiruvottriyur is located at the Chennai Central - Gummidipoondi suburban line of Chennai. The number of train services in this route are quite frequent. Plan to extend Chennai Metro to Thiruvottriyur is under study.
