Triptii Dimri (born 23 February 1994[2][3]) is an Indian actress who works in Hindi films. She made her acting debut in the comedy film Poster Boys (2017) and had her first lead role in the romantic drama Laila Majnu (2018). She gained critical recognition for her performances in Anvita Dutt's period films Bulbbul (2020) and Qala (2022), with the former earning her a Filmfare OTT Award.

Dimri was featured in Forbes Asia's 30 Under 30 list of 2021.[4] She gained popularity with a supporting role in the top-grossing action film Animal (2023), earning a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Early life

Dimri hails from Garhwal in the state of Uttarakhand.[5] She was born to Meenakshi and Dinesh into a Hindu family and in an interview she revealed that her parents have always been supportive of her in her career.[6]

Dimri did her schooling at Delhi Public School, Firozabad and completed her graduation in psychology from Sri Aurobindo College. She later went on to pursue acting at Film and Television Institute of India, Pune after her graduation.[1]

Career

Dimri and Avinash Tiwary in 2018

Dimri made her acting debut with Shreyas Talpade's directorial debut, the 2017 comedy Poster Boys, starring Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol and Talpade in lead roles.[7] An official remake of the Marathi film Poshter Boyz, it featured her as Talpade's love interest.[8][9] A critic for Bollywood Hungama noted that Dimri's performance was overshadowed by others in the ensemble cast, yet found her to be "decent".[10] She next appeared in a leading role in the 2018 romantic drama Laila Majnu, opposite Avinash Tiwary. In her review for Firstpost, Anna M. M. Vetticad noted that she "imbued her Laila with an edge that made the character's constant flirtations with danger believable".[11]

After a short hiatus, Dimri achieved her breakthrough as the protagonist in Anvita Dutt's 2020 supernatural drama Bulbbul, reuniting her with Tiwari for a second time. Produced by Anushka Sharma, the film opened to positive reviews.[12] Namrata Joshi of The Hindu wrote, "From the vulnerable and the innocent to the transformation into the mysterious tease, Dimri is a stunner who speaks volumes with her eyes. And the audience can do little but stay enraptured".[13] Her performance earned her a Filmfare OTT Awards for Best Actor, Web Original Film (Female).[14]

In 2022, Dimri reunited with Dutt and starred in the title role of the critically acclaimed Qala.[15] The film received positive reviews from critics with Dimri's performance as a young singer attempting to simultaneously navigate her personal relationships alongside her career receiving praise.[16] Sanatanu Das of the Hindustan Times found Dimri to be "in fine form" but added that "her character is frustratingly one-note and delivered mostly in the same anxious wavelength".[17] For Dimri, Qala was about "trying to do different genres because as actors it is important to step out of our comfort zone and that is what helps you better your craft".[18]

She then appeared in a brief role in the top-grossing action thriller Animal (2023), starring Ranbir Kapoor.[19] Monika Rawal Kukreja of Hindustan Times appreciated Dimri's appearance in the film, finding her "a treat to look out for".[20] The film proved to be a significant advancement in Dimri's career with her role gaining her wider recognition.[21] She received a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.[22]

Dimri will next star in Anand Tiwari's romantic comedy Bad Newz, alongside Vicky Kaushal and Ammy Virk.[23] She will also star with Rajkummar Rao in the 1990s-set masala film Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video and with Vidya Balan and Kartik Aaryan in the comedy horror sequel Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3.[24][25]

In the media

Dimri was featured by Forbes Asia in their 30 Under 30 list of 2021.[4] She ranked 8th in Rediff.com's list of Bollywood Best Actresses of 2020.[26] She ranked 20th in The Times of India's 50 Most Desirable Women List of 2020.[27]
