Before the establishment of the school, it was on the site of the village of Ha Chung Mei closed to Tsing Yi Lagoon. School motto, school song, houses and school colours
The school motto and school song are shared among all secondary schools founded by Tung Wah Group of Hospitals S. C. Gaw Memorial College.
The school motto is 勤儉忠信(Cantonese: Kan Kin Chung Shun), which means Diligence, Frugality, Loyalty, and Faithfulness (or Faith). The motto is inscribed on a lacquered board in her assembly hall. The motto is also the name of school houses.
The lyrics of school song:
House and school colours
The school divides students and teaching staff into four houses (社, Cantonese: Se). Houses are named after school motto, namely, Diligence (勤), Frugality (儉), Loyalty (忠), and Faithfulness or Faith (信). The system is the same among all Tung Wah secondary schools. The colours of houses are also the school colours which are freely chosen by individual schools. In S. C. Gaw Memorial School, Diligence is in red, Frugality orange, Loyalty yellow and Faithfulness blue.
House committee members are chosen from senior forms, usually form 4 and form 6, who are free from prompt public examinations. The heads of four houses (社長) are chosen from form 6. Houses compete with each other in various school events, like athletes day, swimming gala, games day, talent shows and others, for an annual inter-house competition award.
The school organised classes from Secondary 1 to Secondary 7 (or Form 1 to Form 7). For Junior Forms, from Secondary 1 to Secondary 3, there are 4 classes in each form. For Senior Forms, from Secondary 4 to Secondary 5, there are five classes each form, divided into science, arts and business streams and preparing for Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination.
