Twittering Birds Never Fly (Japanese: 囀る鳥は羽ばたかない, Hepburn: Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai) is a Japanese yaoi manga series written and illustrated by Kou Yoneda. A sequel to Yoneda's previous one shot stories Don't Stay Gold and Tadayoedo Shizumazu, Saredo Naki mo Sezu, it has been serialized in the manga magazines HertZ and ihr HertZ since March 2008. An anime film adaptation, Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai – The Clouds Gather, will be released by Blue Lynx and GRIZZLY in 2019.

Synopsis

Yashiro, a masochistic yakuza boss, enters a relationship with Chikara Doumeki, his impotent bodyguard.

Twittering Birds Never Fly has been serialized in HertZ and ihr HertZ since March 2008.[1] The series has been collected into six tankōbon published by Taiyoh Tosho. An English-language translation has been published by Juné, the yaoi imprint of Digital Manga.[2]

Audio drama

An audio drama adaptation of Twittering Birds Never Fly has been produced by Frontier Works, featuring Tarusuke Shingaki as the voice of Yashiro and Wataru Hatano as the voice of Chikara.[1]

Anime film

An anime film adaptation, Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai – The Clouds Gather, was announced on April 26, 2019. Slated to be released in 2019, the film will be a co-production between Blue Lynx and GRIZZLY. The film's primary production staff includes Kaori Makita as director and Hiroshi Seko as scriptwriter; jazz band H ZETTRIO will compose the film's music.[1][17]

Reception

In 2014, Twittering Birds Never Fly was listed as a top recommended yaoi title in a national survey of Japanese bookstore employees.[18] The manga was shortlisted for the Sugoi Japan Award 2016.[19]
