Fulham F.C. is an English association football club based in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham in West London. The club was formed in 1879 but did not become professional until 1898, when the team were admitted into the London section of the Southern Football League Division Two. They were promoted into the Southern League Division One in 1903 and four years later, Fulham were promoted into the Football League for the first time. The club has not since dropped out of the Football League. Their most successful season to date was the 2003-04 season, when Fulham finished in their highest position in the top-flight (9th) and reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. At this point the club were forced to groundshare with Queens Park Rangers due to drawn-out and problematic redevelopment work at Craven Cottage, the team's home since their formation.
The team, nicknamed "The Cottagers" due to the name of their ground, Craven Cottage, have to date reached the semi-finals of England's premier cup competition, the FA Cup, on two occasions, in 1958 and 1961, as well as quarter-final appearances on two occasions. The club's best performance in the Football League Cup is a run to the quarter-final stage on five separate occasions, the most recent in 2004-05. Fulham have also made an appearance in European competition in the 2002-03 season, reaching the third round of the UEFA Cup after emerging victorious in the Intertoto Cup.
