Background

In Arms Reach (IAR), is a NYC non-profit located on the City College of New York’s Harlem campus. F. rovide free educational and social services to low-income children and families’ within NYC, with a targeted focus on children of incarcerated parents and disengaged youth. Our unique structure allows us to facilitate a successful and diverse group of programming for youth ages 6-20. IAR has provided services to over 750 individuals including program youth, their siblings, guardians, and other family members. Services include over 10,000 hours of tutoring, hundreds of after-school mentoring sessions, intensive college prep curriculum, educational and social based projects’ and activities, and free transportation to upstate prison facilities for children (and relatives) to visit and be reunited with their incarcerated parent. We are currently working with New York State’s Office of Children and Family Services Special Delinquency Program, along with the City College Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education and the Black Male Initiative to provide resources to these children of promise.

Programs

One-on-One Mentoring Ages 6-18

provides positive role models to youth through yearlong mentor-mentee linkages. Mentors assist with homework, build relationships, and facilitate monthly outings and activities.

Tutorial services for youth

P.R.E.P Progressively Reaching Excellence and Preparedness Ages 15-20

College Prep: Youth receive intensive college and life preparation including academic workshops, financial aid assistance, essay writing, college tours, community service, and field trips, along with mentorship from minority males. Students meet twice weekly on Mondays and Thursdays.

=== Career Prep === : Youth receive career preparation including work preparation, interview preparation, job placement, and hands on skill building. They are given the opportunity to visit interesting NYC sites, and are prepared with tools to succeed in the world. GED Placement: Youth create goal assessment and are linked to local GED programs.

Family Connection Visitation Program

Transportation services are provided to various upstate correctional facilities. Creative letter writing also implem
