Practicing Citations

One influence on the Confessional writing movement includes the onset of early Postmodernism, evident in the form's self-reflexivity.^[1]

Some critics argue that Confessional Writing tends to emerge in situations of oppression, as the form allows for marginalised people to express themselves.^[2]

Criticisms of the movement include its appearances of self-indulgence, narcissism, as well as its potential for causing harm to those represented in the works.^[3]

Though the style has since gained global use, the Confessional school of writing emerged in mid-20th century America, by writers and poets such as Adrienne Rich, Robert Lowell, Sylvia Plath, and Anne Sexton.^[4]

Confessional works are closely associated with psychoanalysis.^[5]
