In engineering parlance, the process industries are those concerned with the continuous or batch production of materials or fuels, such as petrochemicals.[1] An alternative term is process manufacturing.
Process industries differ significantly from factories that manufacture discrete products, because different types of plant are used. Typically, process plants utilize vessels, pipes, pumps, valves and instruments (chemical engineering technology), while discrete manufacturing sites generally employ machines for shaping, cutting and assembly (production engineering).
