Joshua Henry (born 1984) is an African-American performer of stage and screen. He is best known for portraying Haywood Patterson in Kander & Ebb's 2010 musical The Scottsboro Boys.[1]

Personal life[edit]

Henry currently resides in Harlem, New York City.[2] He had originally wanted to be an accountant, like his mother, but changed his mind after he was cast as Harold Hill in his high school production of The Music Man in Miami. Henry studied theater at the University of Miami, graduating in 2006.[3]

Career[edit]

In 2007, Henry appeared in the ensemble of the off-Broadway musical In the Heights, re-joining the cast for the subsequent Broadway transfer. Prior to that, he performed in the Paper Mill Playhouse production of Godspell. He was meant to join the latter for a 2008 Broadway transfer, but the project was cancelled.[4] Henry then appeared in the first Sex and the City film in 2008, subsequently playing the scarecrow in The Wiz at the New York City Center in 2009.

Beginning on March 24, 2010, he played "Favorite Son" in the musical American Idiot. He left the role on July 20, 2010, replaced by Wallace Smith.[5]

In June 2009, Henry contributed original music to the off-Broadway musical Shafrika, The White Girl. It played a short run at the Vineyard Theatre. Aside from Henry, those who also contributed music included Tim Acito and Janice Lowe.[6]

Henry then joined the Broadway cast of The Scottsboro Boys, helmed by Susan Stroman with a score by John Kander and Fred Ebb.[7] When describing Haywood Patterson, the character he portrayed, Henry said:

"I always say that he's my hero because he was so completely dedicated to the truth. He grew up in a religious household and that's something I did as well, and my parents always instilled in me the importance of the truth despite circumstance . . . It's such an emotional time and you see Haywood — who is such a tough guy — having this little moment of tenderness, which I feel is such an important and interesting moment."[8]

Despite positive reviews, The Scottsboro Boys was short lived, closing within a month.[9] Shortly before the show's closing, it was announced that Henry would be considered eligible for a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his performance.[10]

Henry, along with Corbin Bleu and Andrea Burns, was featured on "Dare to Go Beyond: The Album", by the group R.Evolución Latina. It was released on December 13, 2010, produced by Luis Salgado.[11] Henry has also appeared on the television series Kings and Nip/Tuck, as well as the 2010 short film Once Upon a Time in Australia.[12]

On January 16, 2011, Henry, Laura Osnes, and Natalie Weiss were featured performers in Kait Kerrigan and Brian Lowdermilk's You Made This Tour concert at the Laurie Beechman Theatre.[13] Later in the same month, on January 22, he was among the performers in the Broadway Memories concert performance in New York, in which he performed selections from The Scottsboro Boys.[14]

He is currently returning to the role of "Favorite Son" in American Idiot, starting on March 15, 2011.[15] Henry will perform in the role until the show's closing on April 24, 2011.[16]
