The Slotermeer (official West Frisian: Sleattemer Mar) is a Frisian Lake in the southwest of the province of Friesland, in the Netherlands.

Description

[edit]

The Slotermeer lies to the north of the city of Sloten, to the ease of Balk and to the south of Woudsend. From it flows the Slotergat [nl] to Sloten, the Ee [nl] to Woudsend and the Luts [nl] to Balk. The lake sometimes just 1.2 meters deep outside the fairways. Towards east next to the fairway, the water depth is about a meter.

During the Elfstedentocht, a tour skating event, the route fares over the Slotermeer twice, once from IJlst to Sloten and once from Sloten towards Stavoren. The lake is often used as a bottleneck in the route: it freezes relatively late and both kluning and ice transportation is impossible. Hence, it is expected that participants must wait before the ice naturally grows.
