Ojibwe double vowel systems[edit]

Is there any difference between the two double vowel systems besides the '/h distinction? If not, we could probably save a column and put the difference in a note. Excellent comparative table ... just a bit wide. ACW 22:23, 27 September 2005 (UTC)

In a table such as the one shown, the only difference between the Fiero and Rhodes spelling is that Fiero differentiates <'> from <h> while Rhodes do not. However in print, there are more differences due to syncope. In addition, Rhodes uses "ġ" (<g> with a superpositioned dot) and "ḳ" (<k> with a subposition dot) to represent the gw/go and kw/ko respectively of Fiero where the vowel may have experienced syncope but the <w> or what remains of <o> are still articulated. Rhodes also uses apostrophies differently, such as to differentiate the "ng" from the "n'g" or "zh" from "z'h", where the <'> is used to indicate vowel loss from syncope. With syncope, other changes occur, including dropping of consonants, shift of consonants from lenis to fortis or vice versa. In some words where unstressed vowels do not experience loss from syncope or do not exrience loss due to being a long vowel, the vowel values often change, typically <i> to <a>, <a> to <i>, <e> to <i> or <a>, <aa> to <e>, <wa> to <o>, <waa> to <oo>, and <ih> to <y>.

Ojibwe language history[edit]

Why did you replace the vowels-with-macrons (to represent long vowels) in Proto-Algonquian with vowels plus <->? I've never seen them represented that way, although admittedly I haven't studied PA that much. But still, I've only seen either macrons or a following colon. I don't know if you've studied it more than I have, and for all I know you have an excellent reason. I'm just wondering.

Huh? Let me take a look, because I did not do any replacing other than to add a column with the Saulteaux spelling... Oh, I see what you mean. I personally didn't make those changes but the changes have occured. Maybe it my computer that did that and I wasn't paying close enough attention to catch what it did. I'll fix that from a different machine.

You're getting me mixed up with my project partner. He's the one who made the heap of Freelang Dictionaries for Indigenous Languages. (Granted, I did review many of them to edit their contents). As for the Ojibwe, I did the data entry to bring it up from about 8,000 entries up to 37,000+ entries while others on the project have done the editing. CJLippert 01:33, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

Minnesota rivers[edit]

Hello! Thanks for all your efforts on the List of Minnesota rivers. I've been meaning to expand it for some time but couldn't ever wrap my mind around all the disambiguation. (Why couldn't they all have been given different names?) I've made several tweaks to the list this evening, so have a look at the history page to check them over if you like. Mostly disambiguating from rivers in other states/countries; I also changed such things as "Vermillion River (North)" and "Vermillion River (South)" to Vermillion River (northern Minnesota)/Vermillion River (southern Minnesota) and so on, since there are numerous other rivers by that name in other places. I also wanted to alert you to be careful not to isolate existing articles, should there be a need for more disambiguation. Such articles can be moved to new titles, but it would be easy to miss if they're changed in the list without being moved (or planned to move), potentially resulting in double articles written for the same stream. I think I caught them all: I moved the former "Swan River (Minnesota)" article to Swan River (northern Minnesota), the former "Wing River" article to Wing River (Leaf River), the former "Partridge River" article to Partridge River (Crow Wing River), and removed the (North Dakota-Minnesota) designation from Bois de Sioux River, which already existed as an article. There's also a Wikipedia:WikiProject Rivers, which doesn't seem very active presently, but the discussion is kind of interesting to read. Qorach ben Dan[edit]

Only if we use diacritics as "Ḳoraḥ ben Dan" since to me there is a great enough sound difference between kaf (כּ) and ḳof (ק). (Alternatively, "Korah ben Dan" would also be an acceptable.) Since this is not my legal name under the US Judicial Court system, spelling is not an issue. However, for some people this is a big issue since the proposed spelling would be in direct conflict with the legal system records of their country.

Massaging Articles[edit]

Hey. Sorry about my long absence, and that I didn't get back to you yet. I'd be glad to help with any of the various articles. You clearly know more than I do about the languages themselves, and their histories, though. I'll do what I can, though. I don't know what to do about writing in the actual syllabics, as opposed to the rather inadequate approximations. The two possible solutions I know of are just pasting in the symbols, despite the fact that most people's computer's probably won't display them unless they install a special font, or making an image (similar to the one on the Ojibwe page). Sorry.
