Goodwin College
[edit]Mission
[edit]The mission of Goodwin College is to educate a diverse student population in a dynamic environment that aligns education, commerce and community. Our innovative programs of study prepare students for professional careers while promoting lifelong learning and civic responsibility. As a nurturing college community we challenge students, faculty, staff and administration to fully realize their highest academic, professional and personal potential.
History
[edit]Goodwin College was founded in 1999. Prior to the founding, the organization was known as Data Institute and was a training school offering non-credit classes in office work and computer technology.
The college became a non-profit in 2004, adopting a board of trustees, and shortly thereafter secured accreditation by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
In 2005, Goodwin College initiated a major project to construct a new campus along the Connecticut River in East Hartford. The college had purchased riverfront property that was home to a defunct oil terminal, and took steps to redevelop the site in partnership with state and federal environmental agencies and the Connecticut Development Authority (CDA). The site had been designated as a brown field, or contaminated area, by the Environmental Protection Agency, and the college removed 30 large oil storage tanks and conducted soil remediation with the help of state and federal funding.
The college was granted approval from the Connecticut Board of Governors for Higher Education to offer bachelor’s degrees in 2008, and began offering its first master’s degree programs in fall of 2017.
