Early Life[edit]

Camden Layell was born in Greenville, South Carolina to an American mother and father, Rhonda and Steve Layell. He is an only child. Shortly after birth, the family moved to Powhatan, Virginia where he grew up. He always felt at odds with the rural environment. Instead of sports, farming, and bull riding, common practices in Powhatan, he preferred the arts. His knack for creativity manifested at a young age. At three years old, he showed an aptitude for playing piano by ear[1] . Layell entered various talent shows throughout his youth and also joined the school band as a mallet percussionist. He is also became an avid fashionista, and supporter of live theatre.

He studied corporate communication and journalism at James Madison University’s School of Media Arts and Design (2008-2012). In 2011, Layell was hired as a features intern at the Daily News-Record, a newspaper of the Shenandoah Valley, through which he profiled various local celebrities such as Christian author and musician, Michael Card[2] , and creator of the 7-Day Menu Planner, Susan Nicholson[3] . He was also hired at several school publications: articles editor for Madison 101, and staff writer for Port & Main, and The Breeze, both award winning publications.

Advertising[edit]

After earning his B.A., Layell found himself in a career standstill. He wanted to write for a living but found journalism too unstable and corporate communication too dry. In a discussion with a friend, he was encouraged pursue a career in copywriting, a career that often requires a substantial portfolio of work for entry-level positions. After doing research on the field, Layell agreed copywriting was the perfect conduit for his wiring and creativity. He applied to the joint copywriting masters program at Florida International University and Miami Ad School, where he is currently studying, developing his skills in various forms of advertising including print, television, radio, outdoor, digital, and mobile. He has worked on actual client briefs for a wide array of brands such as Beats by Dre, BMW, ChapStick, Cracker Barrel, Dockers, Downy, Holiday Inn, Maruchan, Nissan, Pampers, Salvation Army, Sephora, Starbucks, Tide, Visit Florida, and World Fashion Association.
