Paver deck (Paverdecktm)

[edit]

In architecture, a deck is a flat surface capable of supporting weight typically constructed outdoors, often elevated from the ground, and usually connected to a building. A Paverdecktm type deck comprises a galvanized steel diaphragm structure supporting concrete or stone pavers, for use in residential or commercial buildings.[1]

Pregalvanized steel structures are designed to last over 60-years or indefinitely with the use of a replaceable anode system.[2] Stone and concrete pavers are the only materials on earth known to withstand the effects of the sun and weather, regularly lasting more than 40 years[3].

While traditional wood or composite decks require annual maintenance to achieve a limited lifespan, a paver deck requires no maintenance to achieve its lifespan. Pavers can be simply cleaned with water from a hose, or optionally sealed to prevent stain penetration.

A paver deck system is more earth friendly than a traditional wood or composite deck, and without any required maintenance it is the only deck with a zero carbon footprint during use. The pre-galvanized structure is made using steel containing over 70% post consumer recycled content. A paver deck is the only deck that is completely recylcable without any landfill or incineration. The structures are manufactured from recycled steel, require no maintenance, and will not warp, check, split or rot. [4]

A wood structure begins to decay from the time it is harvested from the forest, and requires gallons of chemical cleaners and oil-based stains and sealers over its limited lifetime.

A paver deck provides design freedom, as the steel diaphragm is the complete structure and the stone or concrete pavers can be laid in any pattern. The pavers are dry-laid so can be later changed to suit changes in aesthetics.

The combination of no maintenance costs, and a potential unlimited lifespan, a paver deck is the best investment in a deck. Conventional wood decks are certain to devalue over time, and incur continuing costs in maintenance. A paver deck system may appreciate with the value of your home.

A paver deck may be built at any level, including below grade as a patio. At higher elevations it is generally enclosed by a railing for safety, and may be installed with stairs for access to the ground.
