I have two more sources before I have exhausted both my personal and consortium collections on the Lucy poems. Thus, there shouldn't be any problems if you want to take the page to FA. It really just needs the actual poem sections completed, anglicized completely, and a MoS check. After that, a peer review then an FA nom. The Jones book is called The 'Lucy Poems' , which suggests that they are together Lucy Poems, if we want to standardize it. I don't know about the article. We could find out after the DYK goes through, put a message on the talk page suggesting a move to either Lucy Poems or The Lucy Poems, with an equal move for Matthew? Holy minimalism

I wasn't "accusing" anyone of anything. Why are you taking this personally? The article was completely unsourced and it read like original research. Those tags aren't "pointless." They let other editors know what work needs to be done and more importantly, they let readers know that an article is not up to standard. All I saw was a deletion of quite useful tags with a flippant edit summary. So I reverted it. Now you've added some sources. The system works. You are severly missing the point of a collerabative project. "Accusing" is exactly how thoes tags read; please be more aware of the effect of your actions. Why not add the refs your self instead of tagging and runing. And to remind you, you did say this is origional research, which goes to show how much you know. (YO!) Templating the top of an article with "may be O.R." and "may need references" and "may need more references" without discussing these ideas is intellectually feeble. The article "may be" original research?; so may every other. If you can't provide an argument (in terms of knowledge, in terms of time expenditure), then find a different way to contribute to Wikipedia. These templates were meant to be used sparingly for quite unusual cases. Then they somehow turned into the most counterproductive (article-related) hobby on Wikipedia, ever. Above all, using a canned edit summary that says the edit was by a program called "Friendly" is just too fucking much.

No problem! I also have a question about the sourcing for the hook, which I just noticed.... In the source cited (Boime 1993:206), it says that Ingres made the painting "to fulfill his annual obligations as a pensioner," whereas the hook you gave says "financial obligations"...are these the same thing? I don't know anything about the French Academy in Rome and how all that works, so I don't know what his "annual obligations as a pensioner" might have been, I just wanted to make sure that the hook is accurate. —Politizer ^talk/_contribs 03:52, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

All I did there was add another copy of the same ref right after the information from the hook, since at the time it wasn't clear if the ref was there to verify the information about the painting's style or the information about Ingres' obligations. • The Wreck of the Hoffnung (I'm not sure of the spelling). It's a brilliant painting and deserve an illustration. Just as many of the paintings seem to foreshadow German Expressionism, Munch and Mark Rothko, the Wreck, with its fractured surfaces, hints at the early Cubist paintings of Braque and Picasso, and in particular, Futurism. I just looked at the enlargement. I've never seen the original, or looked at a large repro. Near the ship is what appears to be a frozen figure, covered with the rimey ice of the frozen sea water that has gushed up through the crevices. Speaking of Morrissey....

Here was a rather entertaining moment on Australian TV - the ABC (australia's equivalent of BBC) plays indie/alternative and some popular music from ~1130PM to about 8AM on Friday and Saturday nights. Here Henry Rollins (who is highly regarded in Oz), who was a guest VJ on the show and got to program all the songs, gave a rather colourful opinion on Morrissey about 15 years ago. I was musing on this (and having a good chuckle) and was pleasantly surprised to find it on youtube (bless its archival little soul). • Ironic that you should bring up cites, because as the new WikiProject talk page as well as an essay linked on my user page both make clear, I am very firmly in the pro-cites camp. But I am even more firmly in the pro-Wikipedia, pro-Wikipedians, pro-Reason and pro-Consensus camps. [How I manage to keep my butt in so many camps at once is a matter for speculation, perhaps not all of it polite. ;-P ]
• I would be very interested in... well, I just dunno what form or shape of essay or discussion or forum would suffice. I'm coming to the conclusion that an essay about the Cite Wars may need to take this general tone: "There are two points of view on this question. Essentially, neither is exclusively correct or incorrect, although both can be taken to incorrect extremes. Sometimes as a reviewer, the important thing is not what you say, but how you say it." After that may come an exploration of the motivation for both points of view. Then perhaps a few examples may (or may not) be nice. [But that might be a little contentious... caution is advised.] The motivation part is all about trust, in my opinion. I would like to spend time developing a nuanced exploration, but essentially, the anti-cites folks are saying "I'm right, trust me" while the pro-cites folks are saying "You probably are right, and since I know you, I extend credence to your statements. The problem is, others reading the page don't know you, and Wikipedia has credibility issues out in the wild." Or something like that. These are very, very preliminary thoughts. I would really love to co-write an essay with you (and with others, as desired). The whole point is this: when n00bs nascent reviewers finish reading the essay, they may come away pro- or anti-cites. That part doesn't matter; everyone has an opinion. However, it is very important they come away being unwilling to bicker; unwilling to play the role of a Cite Warrior for either camp. They should come away with an expanded consciousness (quite seriously, although I know that sounds kinda precious or pompous or something). Milton

I really don't care what we use for the Dyk image, but this is more appropriate.

Well, that image is from Milton: a Poem (which would be a lot of work to expand x5), which is one of Blake's prophetic books- he wrote it as well as illustrating it. I mean Blake's illustrations to Milton's poetry, and I didn't mean which image to use for the DYK hook. My question is, should I try to cover all of that material in a single article, or narrow it down to Paradise Lost, which he illustrated most frequently. I've already begun researching on Google Books and such, and the critical precedent seems to be to treat Blake's illustrations to Milton as a single entity.[13]

"Raft of the 'Medusa'"

What you have there is one of Gericault's studies for a different painting. He had in mind doing a number of paintings based on the same account. He made drawings and studies for several pics. This one is earlier in the sequence, because there is a great crowd of figures, and there were ultimately only a few survivors. It is a "Raft of the Medusa" and it is by Gericault, but it's not the same Raft of the Medusa.

It has nothing to do with Michelangelo, so you need to have its name changed or delete it ASAP. In the picture of "The Flood" on the Sistine Chapel ceiling, there is a boat full of people, but quite different to this. Amandajm (talk) 05:31, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

Medusa

I wouldn't let it worry you! One cannot be expected to know everything! It would be interesting to track down the studies for the other works. I've just done a painting (not quite as large!) of one of the most famous shipwrecks off the coast of Australia, the "Dunbar". It went onto the rocks just outside Sydney Heads with 121 people onboard, of whom only one survived. I can't help thinking that the "Medusa" was a stupid name for a ship. The figurehead alone would be enough to scare the shite out of the average superstitious sailor. Ships ought to have good names like "Victory" or "Invincible". Here is a little tale which doesn't seem to be very well known, freaky and all as it is! There was a Mummy case in the British Museum which contained (if I remember rightly, not having read the article since about 1973) a Princess (maybe she was a priestess). All the usual sinister things happened in association with the opening of the tomb. Curses, people sickening and dying etc etc. Anyway, she apparently didn't like being in the B.M. and her ghost used to wander around annoying the curators, plaguing the nightwatchmen and scaring away the customers. She caused sufficient upset for those in charge to relegate her to the basement. On the way down the stairs, the men slipped and dropped the mummy case, which then broke the leg of one of the staff as it made its own way down to the foyer.

The mummy case was then auctioned off, and was bought by the Metropolitan Museum. After further mishaps, it was loaded onto a ship for its trans-Atlantic crossing.... and the name of the ship? .... You guessed it!

I found a really good online account of the mummy at [16]. It's a total fiction, but the man who invented the fiction actually went down on the Titanic, having told the story shortly before he died. One of the people who heard the story survived.

This story was a deliberate concoction. There is a ghost story about the "Dunbar" which didn't come into being until the 1980s and then developed into a more elaborate form and eventually became part of a collection of short stories written as a thesis for a degree in Creative writing.

The story was first told by an old man who used to sleep either under the steps of the church hall, or in the small shed that housed the engine that drove the organ blower. This habit was a real problem as the shed was tiny and if part of the man or his clothing got caught in the driving belt, the results would have been horrible. He spent his days in the cemetery with another old man, and a piebald rat by the name of Dennis.

The story goes:

The enclosure which houses the tomb of the victims of the Dunbar also has a regular stela-type tombstone on the grave of Capt. John Steane R.N. who was a passenger on the ship. Not far away is a much larger and more elaborate tomb over the grave of Captain Thomas Watson, the Harbour Master of Sydney Harbour, and his wife Hannah, who predeceased her husband.

The tomb contains a hive of ordinary domestic bees. The hive has been fumigated in case someone got stung, but the bees soon returned, and the smell of honey on a warm day is delicious. It's a bit like the bees' nest in the carcase of the lion that was turned into a riddle by Samson.

According to the old man, Hannah Watson was in love with Capt. John Steane. According to the old man, on misty nights Hannah rises from her tomb, grey and ethereal, and drifts over to the grave where she meets the ghost of her lover. This was the whole story, as originally told. The old man hanged himself from a Scots Pine near Hannah's grave, and was sadly missed by his old drinking companion.

People who had heard the story began to make connections. It was observed that Hannah died only a few days before the "Dunbar" carrying her suposed lover, went down. It is (or else isn't) a known fact that Captain Watson had a violent temper. It is a fact that he invested in trade and sometimes travelled to China. Capt. John Steane was (or wasn't) stationed in Australia. (This is probably true, since most of the passengers were Australians returning home.) The story goes that Watson returned to Australia and discovered his wife pregnant. She confessed her affair, and wrote to Steane begging him not to return because her husband threatened to kill him. Watson (who is much maligned by this story) beat up his wife who, in her "delicate condition" died a few days later, not knowing that her lover was nearing Sydney in the fast clipper ship.

Watson cursed Steane. That night, with a fair wind blowing, the "Dunbar" was seen by a coastal steamer, coming up the coast of NSW at a great pace with all its sails spread. In order to get in through Sydney Heads, it sailed north of the harbour's entrance, and turned back (usual practice, given the wind direction). No-one knows exactly what went wrong, except that it appears that a sudden storm blew up, the direction of the wind changed suddenly and the ship was driven onto the cliff face just south of the harbour mouth, right under the South Head Lighthouse. It has been suggested that the captain mistook the jutting cliffs around a formation known as "The Gap" for the entrance to the Heads. This is not very likely, if he had ever sailed into Sydney before. Anyway, it just happens that the bay on the harbour-side of South Head is called Watson's Bay, and this has given its name to the whole location, adding to the sinister story. (Apparently Watson's Bay was named after a different Watson entirely, but no matter!)

Add to this tale, an incident recorded at the time of the wreck. The Lighthouse Keeper's wife awoke from a terrible dream and told her husband that a ship was wrecked, and people were screaming. To calm her fears, he went out into the storm and saw nothing. The following day the bodies were found floating in the water. My thoughts are that he probably didn't bother to look, but merely struggled through the gale to the dunny and back. One would not really want to go peering over the cliff's edge in foul weather!

Anyway, Captain Watson, driven by remorse at the enormity of the loss that his curse had caused to the populace of Sydney, and also to turn away suspicion at the part he had played in the death of his abused wife, erected one of the grandest monuments in the cemetery over her remains.

As far as I know, there is no evidence whatsoever that Steane and Hannah were lovers. The whole tale appears to be pure invention, but it has been interesting, observing its development.

Dante Rating

I am terribly sorry about the C rating mishap. We are currently working to have our template changed to get the C rating back. For the mean time, I switched all C-class poetry articles to start class so they didn't show up as not having a rating at all. It really was more of a provisional act to allow us to continue assessing articles that have no class at all without running across C class articles that registered as having no rating. Lucy

I don't mind its being without an image, although I admit it looks a bit naked now. Do you see my point, though, about her... ethereality and formlessness? I don't know if I'm being very clear here. I'm not inflexible on this; it may yet be possible to find the right female figure... I think avoiding faces is key here. There are a couple of Friedrichs that could work, but in each case they aren't quite right. His work captures the right sense of beauty and isolation/separation, though, I think. Lucy and FA

I had to go back and make changes that would have kept the page from making FA. Remember, we can only have images that directly deal with the page, and that the captions cannot be over a certain length. The autoformatting needs to be allowed. Plus, the Lucy poems are extremely dark and forboding. The whole basis is on the emphasis of death and his desires to have his sister die to better his own life, and the depression he feels over having these thoughts. This is literally the darkness moment of Wordsworth's life, and the Haydon painting was painted to reflect such a state of Wordsworth's being. Oh sorry, just saw you'd asked, Outriggr. I ordered Moonrise Over the Sea. The reason is in fact a bit lame. It's that as a kid I loved the quote "A ship at harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are for". You know how sometimes you're looking to make a change and then you get a fortune cookie that affirms your idea and you're like "alright, I'm going for it." No, Ceoil is wrong. They are both entering the harbor. The Bowsprit is on the Prow of the ship. If the ships were seen from behind, then the mast would be visible in front of the sail. I eliminated some of the variations in the title, but I think you should move this back to "The Raft..." in line with the common English title and the original French, WP's dislike of "The" not withstanding. You might like to mention the Winslow Homer's The Gulf Drift and Watson and the Shark in the influences section if you are planning on expanding the article further (though you are busy fighting with Ottava right now by the look of it. Yes, it is a red capped mushroom with white spots.
