The Neptunes were an Australian Indie pop band, formed in Perth in 1987.
Biography
[edit]The Neptunes can be regarded as the super group of the late 1980s Perth music scene with Greg Hitchcock (ex-The Bamboos), Jamie Parry (The Marigolds), Rob Findlay, Rick Mason (both ex-The Rosebuds, ex-Diddy Wah Who Daddy's), Martin Moon (The Chevelles, Jack & The Beanstalk) and Dave Shaw (The Stems). They released 2 mini-LP's Hydrophobia and Godfish in 1989 which were compiled on CD in 1991 by Citadel Records.
Their gigs became just as noted for the female stage invasions and the red cordial fuelled hi-jinks of the band as it was for their tight ensemble playing and stellar choice of covers (Sam the Sham and The Barracudas amongst others). They were the ultimate good time party rock'n'roll band at a time when rock'n'roll didn't have a lot of party left in it. The Neptunes' sound lies somewhere between surf-tinged garage-beat and pure surf.
In 2003 Illustrious Artists complied all of The Neptunes recordings, from both their mini-LPs, togther with material recorded at the Perth ABC studios for Triple J during that station's national infancy and released it as Orange Golden Laughter. The recordings were fully restored and remastered by JJJ's "Live at the Wireless", Cameron McCauley, with the artwork by Greg Hitchcock.
