Johnny "Rubberman" Walker (born Charleston, South Carolina) better known as "Mr. Wrestling II," was an American professional wrestler from the 1960s into the 1980s.

Career[edit]

Waker was a journeyman heel during the decade of the sixties who, while he certainly enjoyed his share of success, never really made a major impact in any of the various Southeastern promotions he wrestled for, with Tennessee being the exception. By the late 1970s, he came to Florida Championship Wrestling and was working mainly tag matches. By this point, he was in his 40s, balding and his career looked to be near the end. However, a promotion war broke out in Georgiawhen Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Ray Gunkel died suddenly and his wife Ann took over his position. Gunkel's partner decided to shut her out of the company so Gunkel started a company of her own to run opposition to Georgia Championship Wrestling. Mr. Wrestling Tim Woods, who was working in Florida with Walker at the time, was brought in by Georgia Championship Wrestling for television tapings because he had been a large draw in Georgia years piror. However, Florida promoter Eddie Graham did not allow Woods to return to Georgia full time so Georgia Championship Wrestling decided to create a Mr. Wrestling II to be the main draw for house showss.

Walker was chosen and they debuted him by running an angle where Woods was injured and could not compete in a tournament for the Georgia Heavyweight Championship. Walker filled in as Mr. Wrestling II, wearing Woods' white mask and white tights, and won the tournament, establishing him as a top star. While he wore the same outfit, he was much different Woods. Woods presented himself more as a legitimate athlete by using his amatuer wrestling background and being generally calm during interviews. Walker was more of a brawler and gave excited and more spirited interviews. Later, Walker woud turn on

Clad in heroic white, Walker's career was truly given new life when he was brought into the promotion as Mr. Wrestling II. Almost immediately, the Georgia fans rallied behind the mysterious new wrestler and his popularity eventually overtook even that of his more established partner. II was one of the most popular single wrestlers in the Florida and Georgia areas in the 1970's and early 1980's. Considered one of the greatest American wrestlers not to win a world title - masked or no mask. Finishing maneuver: the knee lift. Trained or mentored wrestlers Magnum T. A., Rick Rude, Tony Atlas, and Hercules Hernandez. President Jimmy Carter's favorite wrestler. Notable Feuds: The Assassin, The Spoiler, The Masked Superstar, Jack Brisco, Buddy Colt, Magnum T. A., Jimmy Garvin, Tim Woods, Minnesota Wrecking Crew, Larry Zbyszko, The Road Warriors. Dominated Georgia Championship Wrestling during his tenure but his legacy is surprisingly overlooked and underrated during today's WWE's dominion over the sport.
