History

[edit]

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi, is commonly, though not formally, considered as the Father of Nation in India. His 16-feet high bronze statue was donated to the Indian Parliament by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.[1] The statue was sculpted by Ram V. Sutar, who was selected after a competition carried out by the Central Public Works Department.[2] Situated at the main entrance of the parliament, gate number 1, the statue was unveiled by the then President of India Shankar Dayal Sharma on 2 October 1993, the Gandhi Jayanti.[1]

It was shifted to gate number 3, the entrance of the Speaker, on 19 January 2021 to make a way for the construction of new Indian parliament building.[3]
