Alcatraz San Francisco Bay, California Believed to be inhabited by evil spirits by the local Miwok Indians, Alcatraz Island was originally used as a military installation in the mid to late 19th century. In 1912, Alcatraz Prison was constructed to house the most dangerous and notorious prisoners in the United States including such criminals as Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly. The prison closed in 1963 and the island was turned over to the National Park Service which currently operates the island. Staff and visitors have reported activity throughout the prison. This activity includes clanging sounds, screams, crying and disembodied voices. [2]
The Breakers Newport, Rhode Island The Breakers is a 70-room mansion built as a summer home by Cornelius Vanderbilt II. Built between 1893 and 1895, the house is now leased to the Preservation Society of Newport County and is operated as a house museum. The mansion is believed to be haunted by the spirit of Alice Claypoole Gwynne, the wife of Cornelius Vanderbilt. [2]
