Speedy Deletion - Information for New Users[edit]

So you've just signed up as a Wikipedia editor and created your first article. Now all of a sudden there's a big box saying it will be deleted. What happened?

Well, here at Wikipedia, we want you to help out but we have some very strict criteria about what can be an article and what can't, and we have lots of people checking every new article to be sure it qualifies.

What do I do now?

  1. Read Your First Article
  2. Think about moving the article into your user space so you can work on it some more. Here's how to move it: [instructions here] or you can ask for help at the Help Desk. If you move the article to your user space, you can remove the speedy deletion template, improve your article, then ask someone more experienced if it's ready for primetime yet.
  3. Do nothing and it will be deleted. If you don't have enough good information and reliable sources, you can always copy what you did onto your own local computer until you can add more. When you're ready to put the article back onto Wikipedia, it's best to put it into your user space and ask someone else if it's ready to be used as an article.
  4. It's really best if you try to edit some other articles just to get some experience on how things work around here. We want your help, so please stick around. As you get more familiar, you'll realize that there's lots of people here willing to help you out too!
