Sebastian Manz (born 1986) is a German clarinetist, who also performs internationally as a soloist. He is also active as an arranger and composer.[1].

Life and work

[edit]

Manz is the son of the pianists Wolfgang Manz and Julia Goldstein, daughter of the Soviet violinist Boris Goldstein. He received his first clarinet lessons at the age of seven with Wilfried Berk at the Hanover Music School. In 1997, at the age of eleven, he was accepted as a junior student at the Musikhochschule Lübeck.[2] From 2003 to 2010 he was a regular student there. He studied under Sabine Meyer and Reiner Wehle.[1]

He won first place in Jugend musiziert in 1994 and 1999–2003.[2]

Sebastian Manz made his first tour as a soloist in 1999 as a 13-year-old to Poland with the orchestra of the Hanover Music School, and in October 2000 the orchestra toured France. He has also performed at the EXPO 2000 and as a soloist with the Magdeburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra, the Neubrandenburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Württembergisches Kammerorchester Heilbronn and the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra.

In 2006 Sebastian Manz was invited to the "Schubertiade" festival in Japan, where he performed both chamber music and as a soloist. Since this trip he has made regular guest appearances in the Asian region.

In 2008, Manz won the 1st prize in clarinet at the Internationaler Musikwettbewerb der ARD, which had not been awarded for 40 years, a significant event for his further career. This was immediately followed by performances with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra with television recording, the RSO Stuttgart and the Collegium Musicum in Basel.

In his debut at the Tonhalle Zürich on 4 May 2010 he played Mozart's Clarinet Concerto with the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie conducted by their designated chief conductor Eugene Tzigane. Manz performed with Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Germany, and Collegium Musicum Basel, Switzerland. Since 2010, he is soloist in the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra.[3] From the 2012/13 to the 2014/15 season he was an artist in the "Junge Wilde" series at the Konzerthaus Dortmund.

In addition to his work with the SWR Symphony Orchestra, Manz performs as a soloist with various other orchestras, not only in Germany, but also in other European countries and occasionally in the USA and Japan. He also performs chamber music works with a number of musical partners at festivals and on other prestigious stages.[1]
