Alexis of Russia

Alexis (1629–1676) was the tsar of Russia from 1645 until his death. Born in Moscow on 29 March 1629, the son of Tsar Michael and Eudoxia Streshneva, the sixteen-year-old Alexis acceded to the throne after his father's death. Boris Morozov, a shrewd boyar open to Western ideas, took charge of Russia in the early years of Alexis's reign, but was exiled from Moscow following a popular uprising. Alexis responded to the uprising with a new legal code. His reign saw wars with Poland and with Sweden, a schism in the Russian Orthodox Church, and the major Cossack revolt of Stenka Razin. Alexis was married twice and had sixteen children, including tsars Fyodor III; Ivan V; Peter the Great; and Sofia, who ruled as regent for her brothers from 1682 to 1689.

This oil painting, made by an unknown artist in the 1670s, is now located in a museum in Ptuj, Slovenia.

Wikipedia languages

TFA

Today's Featured Article (top left).

  • Selection process at WP:TFAR; editors make a request for an article to run on a given date, and the community discusses
  • User:Bencherlite, TFA director, assesses requests and schedules the article if appropriate
  • In the absence of any requests, Bencherlite picks a featured article (hat hasn't previously been today's featured article) at his discretion
  • Writing a featured article and seeing it get its 'day in the sun' is widely considered a significant achievement
  • Content rotates every 24 hours at 00:00 UTC.

ITN

In the News (top right).

  • Links to articles on important current events that have been improved to reflect recent developments
  • Items are nominated and discussed at WP:ITN/C; any admin can post the suggested blurb to the main page once it has consensus and has been updated
  • Discussion also consider "significance", which can make the process subjective
  • Items stay up in chronological order until they drop off the bottom as they are replaced by more recent events
  • Ongoing events and recent deaths are sometimes listed at the bottom of the template

DYK

Did You Know? (bottom left).

  • DYK was created to showcase interesting facts from new article; articles that have recently been significantly expanded, and newly promoted good articles are also eligible. The criteria are less rigorous than for a featured article, for example, meaning that editors receive some recognition for smaller contributions which add good-quality content to the encyclopaedia.
  • Articles are nominated at T:TDYK, where an independent editor will assess whether the nomination meets the criteria; assuming it does, they will approve it and it will be moved to a holding area.
  • The hooks in the holding area are approved by an administrator, who moves them to a queue; a bot moves the hooks from the queue to the main page at pre-determined times.
  • Content rotates every 6-12 hours.

OTD

On this Day/Selected Anniversary (bottom right).

  • Serves a similar purpose to ITN, except it features good-quality articles about historic events which have anniversaries on the day in question
  • A list of important anniversaries is compiled for each day of the year (example); anybody can add anniversaries to the list until a few days before the present date (at which point the page is protected). Around six anniversaries are featured each day, chosen for variety (with surrounding days' OTD and with other content on the main page) and article quality as well as significance
  • Disputes are resolved on each page's talk page or at WT:SA.
  • Content rotates every 24 hours at 00:00 UTC.

POTD

Picture of the Day (full width, below DYK and OTD)

  • A featured picture chosen more-or-less in order of promotion to FP status, though sometimes chosen for relevance to a particular date or by request.
  • Accompanied by a caption and a link to a relevant article.
  • Content rotates every 24 hours at 00:00 UTC.

TFL

Today's Featured List (full width, below POTD; Mondays and Fridays only).

  • A featured list (an article which primarily exists to list a group of items, and is considered to be of equivalent quality to a featured article) chosen in a similar manner to the TFA.
  • Editors make suggestions for a list to run on a given date, which is discussed at WP:TFLS.
  • Featured list directors schedule TFLs from the submissions page or at their own discretion.
  • TFL is displayed from 00:00 to 23:59 (UTC) on Mondays and Fridays (at least partly because there are fewere featured lists than featured articles, and the subject matter can be less varied).
