OBoD, or Orange Bar of Doom, is a gadget that restores the old "You have new messages" bar, which was removed as part of the new Notifications system ("Echo"). It is in no way a replacement of Notifications. You may continue to use Notifications, and may set your Notifications preferences however you like. You will continue to receive a Notification (as well as the orange bar) whenever someone changes your user talk page.
Because this orange bar is a superficial workaround, it does not provide a link to the last diff on your talk page (though it does link directly to the page itself). Instead, it tells you who was the last person to edit it.
This gadget uses JavaScript. If you have JavaScript disabled in your browser, you will not see the orange bar.
The gadget is set on as default for all logged-in users. If you wish to turn it off, you may do so by visiting your Gadgets preferences and deselecting OBoD in the Appearance section. Again, you will continue to receive any and all Notifications you have selected in your Notifications preferences.
