[edit]In the spring of 1954 residents Fernando Macedo Pinto, Carlos da Silva and Paulo Antas wished to hold a treasure hunt around the streets of Macau. With no experience of organising such an event, da Silva wrote to the Hong Kong Motor Sports Club for advice. The co-founder of the Hong Kong club, Paul Dutoit, visited Macau and was shown the proposed course. The course reminded Dutoit of Monaco and he told them that they should hold a Grand Prix not a treasure hunt. Police chief Julio da Cruz was sympathetic to the idea.[1]
Circuit
[edit]In 2016 higher catch fencing was installed to improve safety[2] and in 2018 'sausage kerbs' were installed to discourage drivers from exceeding track limits.[3]
1955
[edit]Theodore "Teddy" Yip, who's later contributions helped put the Macau Grand Prix on the international motorsport map, crashed his Jaguar XK120 in practice and did not take part in the race.[4][a]
1962
[edit]Arsenio "Dodjie" Laurel, son of José P. Laurel, the President of the Philippines during the Japanese occupation, won the Grand Prix in a Lotus 22.[1]
1963
[edit]Laurel won the Grand Prix for the second time, again in the Lotus 22, becoming the first driver to win in two consecutive years. The Lotus was later presented to Macau's Grand Prix Museum by Laurel's brother Salvador Laurel and Philippine Motor Association representative Conrad Ayuyao.[6] Yip finished third.[5]
1967
[edit]In 1962 and 1963 winner Laurel was killed during the Grand Prix when the Brabham he was driving crashed.[1]
1975
[edit]In 1975 the Grand Prix came under the jurisdiction of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, the international motorsport sanctioning body.[7]
1978
[edit]Race of Giants
[edit]As part of the celebrations, Bob Harper, assisted by Yip, organised the Race of Giants, bringing top names in motorsport to the Guia circuit. Drivers included Prince Bira, Jack Brabham, Phil Hill, Denny Hulme, Jacky Ickx, Stirling Moss and Bobby Unser. Yip himself participated in the race.[5]
1983
[edit]The title race changed to being run under FIA Formula 3 rules. Yip's Theodore Racing fielded a strong team of Ayrton Senna, Martin Brundle and Roberto Guerrero.[5]
1987
[edit]The F3 cars reached a top speed of 160 mph (260 km/h), the highest speed on any track of the then F3 calendar.[8]
1989
[edit]Race of Champions
[edit]Yip organised the Race of Champions to once again bring established motorsport drivers to the circuit. Drivers included Denny Hulme, Roy Salvadori, Al Unser, Bobby Unser, Alan Jones and winner Geoff Lees.[5]
2018
[edit]On lap 4 of the F3 Sophia Flörsch's car clipped another car and was launched into the air. The car went through the catch fencing and landed on a photographers bunker. Flörsch and 4 others were injured and hospitalised. The accident was widely reported, including on social media, and the circuit was called unsafe. The organisers and FIA issued statements that the circuit was safe and this was an isolated incident.[9]
