Oscar Wilde.jpeg
This user knows that all good Wilde stories end in tragedy.

Writing here helps organise my ideas, approach subjects more comprehensively & evenly, and share information with others. A lot of, er, paper-pushing happens on Wikipedia, so I divide my time between writing and reviewing articles, and help out with translation and copy-edit requests. Mentoring university students through the public policy initiative was the first non-mainspace work I've done. Academia is a natural home for Wikipedia, fostering those links and a new culture could be the most important development since the encyclopedia's inception.

In 2007, when I should have been writing an essay in university, I tried to correct a typo, but found my IP had been banned for vandalism. Strange, seeing as it was my first edit. It turned out there had been an (excessive) institutional ban. I successfully appealed it and wrote the incident up for the university newspaper. Having had to create an account and read a stack of policies I found Wikipedia's achievements and organisation impressive and decided to stay. With this old account I about 800 edits, mostly minor. I decided to start afresh without anonymity and with renewed vigour, I've already noticed that I'm holding myself to a higher standard. I'll write more here in the future, probably.

Translation[edit]

Paris Metro Line 14

Paris Metro Line 12. My first lengthy translation attempt anywhere, it taught me something about both languages; notably railway jargon.

Courrier International. An interesting read and concept for a weekly paper. The French article is by no means perfect, but better share something with English readers.

Haussmann's renovation of Paris - Revisions to the entire article, for both better expression in English and closer to the meaning of the French original.

French constitutional law of 23 July 2008 - revised initial paragraphs of a poor/machine translation.

Copy-editing/clean-up[edit]

Note: For practical reasons I am now only occasionally recording especially demanding or interesting articles. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Backlog elimination drives/September 2011 for my articles done during that month. I regularly pick up requests from Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Requests and make fixes in articles as I read them. Personal requests on my talk page are welcome.

The Beatles in India ‎[edit]

Thanks for your help in copy-editing The Beatles in India. Even 'minor' improvements are worthwhile, and some of yours weren't minor at all. After you edited it I made a few more changes, and moved some sentences for better flow.[1] I hope I haven't ruined it! ;) I'm going to double check some of the references, and will nominate it for FAC soon. Your contributions will help the article qualify.   Will Beback  talk  21:47, 24 September 2011 (UTC)
