I’ve noticed in Mumbai that people’s voices are loudly heard, their apprehensions addressed; and this was a refreshing experience. Having been brought up in Japan, my cultural definition of a footpath was solely used for commuting. In Japan, even with the abundance of space, everything that was once public has gradually become privately owned. The government does not encourage people to “hang-out” outside for the fear of a protest or voicing political dissatisfaction. The lack of public spaces as a vehicle of expression has fostered a common feeling of solitude and fragmentation in Japanese society. It is a county you can’t feel connected to, or share any similar feelings.[1]
