The official name is to be used when writing about the road in an article; only use the article title in another article if the sentence would otherwise be ambiguous. Never use a colloquial title other than those listed above, unless you are mentioning that it exists in the article.

Official nicknames for highways (i.e. Golden State Freeway, Tri-State Tollway, New Jersey Turnpike) may be used if the DOT uses it. However, colloquial names such as The Loneliest Road in America should not be used.

Footnotes[edit]

  1. ^ This column should be referred to in the rare case of the same route number repeated on separate segments in the same state. Only endpoint locations should be used. The names of subdivision(s) smaller than a county, borough, or parish may be used if they are well-known or significantly shorter than the county/borough/parish name(s) would be. This should be determined by consensus.
  2. ^ Named highways are at <name of road> Highway.

Footnotes[edit]

  1. ^ The state name must be added where the route number is repeated in multiple locations. If the segments cover multiple states, use only the terminal state names separated by an en dash (). In these cases, "Interstate X" should be used as a disambiguation page.
  2. ^ The state name must be added where the route number is repeated in multiple locations. If the segments cover multiple states, use only the terminal state names separated by an en dash (). If the highway is a loop or beltway that passes through more than two states, either all state names, a metro area name, or an alternative name for the road may be used. In all cases of such repetition, "Interstate X" should be used as a disambiguation page.
  3. ^ The official AASHTO route logs and documents refer to these highways as "U.S. Route X". However, the term "U.S. Highway X" is used by many states DOTs, and may be used in article prose where this nomenclature is prevalent.
