LIU, JIYUAN (刘济源) is a famous Chinese Architect in the 20th century.

Early years

Liu was born in Hunan province in China in 1921. He went to Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU) in 1948. The school is formerly known as The Shanhaiguan Beiyang Railway Official School, established in 1896. It is one of the earliest institutions of higher learning in China in modern times. The school has been renamed and relocated several times and is currently located in Chengdu, Sichuan Province .

Architectural works

Liu was the first one to get the honor of NATIONAL ENGINEERING SURVEY AND DESIGN MASTER of CHINA at Ministry of Transportation in 1990. He worked on Expressways, Highways and Bridges industries in China over the half century. Starting from the 1950s, he designed and geographically investigated over 100 bridges and over 6000km expressways and highways. The selected masterpieces are as following.

Bridges

Liu was an early member to work on different bridge structures, such as arch bridge, cable-stayed/suspension bridge, T-shaped rigid frame bridge etc. Several of his works:

This bridge is located in Hunan province in China, built in Nov., 1959. This bridge is the first bridge cross Xiang River.

This bridge is located in Hunan province in China, built in Dec., 1959.

Nanping Bridge on Min River (闽江南平大桥)

This bridge is located in Fujian province in China, built in the 1950s. This bridge is the first bridge cross Min River (Fujian).

Others

Some other bridges are located on Xuan Hua Yang River (宣化洋河) & Ye River (冶河) in Hebei province, Wei River (渭河),Yangtze River (长江), Huangpu River(黄浦江), Yellow River (黄河). Some multinational bridges, such as Gilgit Suspension Bridge (吉尔吉特吊桥), Takte Suspension Bridge (塔科特吊桥) (Both built in 1960s) etc. T-shaped rigid frame bridge on Ye River and Takte Suspension Bridge are ahead of the same industry level in the same period.

Expressways & Highways

Since the 1960s, Liu designed and geographically investigated over 6000km expressways and highways. Several of his works:

Tianshan Mountains(天山), Qinghai-Tibet(青藏) Highway

Liu designed and geographically investigated Tianshan Mountains, Qinghai-Tibet highway since the 1950s. It's the first highway to connect Tianshan Mountains, Qinghai, Tibet. The work got the honor of National Excellent Design Award, National Science and Technology Progress First Prize.

Liu designed and geographically investigated the first expressway (Jingjintang expressway) in China since the 1970s. Jingjintang expressway [2] connects Beijing, Tianjin, Tanggu. The standard, graphic design, computation and regulation of Jingjintang Expressway were issued under his editorship. This extraordinary high-technology work has large-scale economic and political meanings for China with many awards. It is a milestone in the history of the national communication system. This work is called as the "Root" of China's Expressway.

Senior advisory & Committee

Liu wrote and edited the National Transport Technology Standard and Design Manual. He participated in or approved the preparation of some national technical specifications and design manuals. More than 1 million words of highway bridge and culvert design manual were edited by him. He had many publications with different journals since 1950s. He did advise and teach some students, who lately became members of China Engineering Academy. In the autumn of his life, he worked as the senior adviser and committee for a few expressways connecting critical cities, such as Fokai (Foshan 佛山-Kaiping 开平) expressway; a few complex architectural systems including expressways, bridges and tunnels, such as The Second Nanjing Yangtze Bridge(南京长江二桥).[3]


Personal life

His wife, JIANING LIU (刘家宁) [4] also worked for Roads and Bridges industries in China over 60 years. She designed Nan Pu Bridge in Shanghai. She was Jiyuan Liu's classmate at Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU). She was an well-known female architect in the older generation of China.
