Course description[edit]

Introduction to Psychology is an introductory overview of the field of psychology. It is an examination of behavioral, cognitive, psychoanalytic, humanistic and biological viewpoints in psychology. The course includes learning principles and applications, motivation, emotions, stress, psychobiology, personality, abnormal behaviors and approaches to therapy. The course fulfills Associate of Arts general education requirements.

Assignment overview[edit]

You will be either creating a new psychology article or improving an existing psychology article on Wikipedia. Even though you are amateurs in the field of psychology there are many 'stub' class articles on Wikipedia that you will be able to significantly improve. Treat this assignment like a research paper, but instead of turning it in to me, you will be contributing to the sum of all human knowledge on Wikipedia.

It is important for you to follow instructions and not get behind in following the assignment timeline, there will be little or no credit for late assignments. If you are struggling with any aspect of this assignment see me during my office hours ASAP.

My general advice is to worry firstly about generating good content (doing the research and writing it up), and secondly about the technical aspects of Wikipedia. Remember that you can edit any page on Wikipedia so if you don't know how to do something, find where someone else has done that and copy them. This is assignment is incremental, so don't get behind. If you are having any trouble at all please come see me during office hours!

Assignment timeline[edit]

This is a summary of the key due dates and the expected timeline for the Wikipedia-related assignment(s). In general a week ends on Sunday, so when something is due week 2, that means you need to have it completed by the Sunday of the second calendar week of class. Assignments turned in late will receive half-credit at most.

Each week lists what (if anything) we will be doing in class, which wikipedia resources will be useful to you in completing the weeks assignments, and of course the assignments for the week.

Week 1[edit]

In class
  • Overview of the course
  • Introduction to how Wikipedia will be used in the course
Readings and Tutorials
Assignment (due 4 September 2011)
  • Create a Wikipedia account
  • Create a user page with information about you that will also be used to track your progress, like this one from last semester: User:MTHarden/ExampleStudent
  • Sign up on the list of students at the bottom of this page.
  • Extra Credit: Sign up to be a Wiki-Student Aide (WSA) for class. If you are computer savvy (or you are already a Wikipedia editor) discuss with the professor the opportunity to earn extra credit by serving as a mentor to less savvy students.

Week 2[edit]

In class
  • Basics of editing
  • Anatomy of Wikipedia articles, what makes a good article, how to distinguish between good & bad articles
Handouts and readings
Assignments (due 14 September 2011)
  • To practice editing and communicating on Wikipedia, introduce yourself and leave a message for the classmate above you on the class list on their user talk page.
  • Add a new section to your user page with the level 2 heading of "Psychology 101 Assignments" and begin an ordered list of your assignments as you complete them.
Milestone
  • All students have Wikipedia user accounts and are listed on the course page.

Week 3[edit]

In class
  • Tips on finding the best articles to work on for class assignments
Reading
Links
Assignments (due 18 September 2011)
  • Critically evaluate an existing Wikipedia article related to the class, and leave suggestions for improving it on the article's discussion page. Be sure to link to your evaluation from your User page (like the example student)
  • Research and list 3–5 articles on your Wikipedia user page that you will consider working on as your main project. Make it a numbered list, with wiki-links to the articles. Be sure to specify if you are intending to create a new article.

Weeks 4 & 5[edit]

In class
  • Discussion about how to choose 'good' sources
  • Demonstration of adding a reference to an article.
Wikipedia Polices, Readings and Tutorials about References
Assignment (due 2 October)
  • Note the due date.Add 1–2 sentences of new information, backed up with a well-sourced citation, to a Wikipedia article on your list of potential main project articles. Be sure to actually read the policies, readings and tutorials before attempting this. If you use a bad source, or plagiarize then you will get a zero (0) on this assignment. If you don't know what a bad source is, even after our discussion in class and reading WP:SOURCE, then you might want to visit the library. The reference librarians like helping you (but not doing your work for you), and will be happy to clue you in on what constitutes a good source, and even point you to our college’s databases of psychological science articles. Be sure to link to the diff on your user page.
  • Add the {{WAP psych student}} template to your user page. (If you still have the {{New user bar}} you might want to delete it.) It should look like this (so "edit" this section and copy the code for it):

For next week
  • Instructor evaluates student's article selections, by week 2 October 2011.

Week 6[edit]

In class
  • Discuss the range of topics students will be working on and strategies for researching and writing about them.
Tools and Guides
Assignments (due 9 October 2011)
  • Read the contributions (The week 4&5 assignment) of the two students beneath you on the class list (if you are at the bottom of your class roll-over to the top). If students below you didn't do the week 4&5 assignment you can hop over them. Remember you can check their user-page or the contribs link to see what your classmates have done. Use the diff feature in the article history to see exactly what each student did. Copy-edit as necessary, and check for WP:COPYVIO, WP:CLOSEPARAPHRASE and accuracy. Post your review of their sentence and reference and what you did to fix it on the article's talk page. Full credit for this assignment is 10 points per student reviewed (capped at 20), but by going above and beyond you can earn extra credit up to 15 points per student reviewed (meaning this could be worth 50 points).
Optional Extra Credit

Week 7 & 8[edit]

In class
  • Discussion about collaborating on drafts
Readings and Tutorials
Assignments (due 11-11-11)
  • If the article you have been assigned exists it should have the {{WAP assignment}} on it's discussion page.
  • Each article should have a sand-box draft linked on the article table, where you and up to 4 other classmates will work on it.
  • Create a new section on the talk page of your article draft (sandbox) and write a brief summary of your planned improvements including an annotated bibliography of 3-5 relevant sources. Here is a good example of an annotated bibliography. Remember the ACE center and library can help you with this. You might coordinate this effort with the other students working on your article.
  • Continue research and expand your article (in your sandbox for now).

Final Assignments[edit]

Reading
Assignment (Due December 8th)
  • Expand your article. Using the information from your bibliography, expand your selected article. Try to work with the other students working on the same article. Review edits made by other students to your article and try to achieve a quality encyclopedic style article. This is your last chance to show me that you learned something.
  • Complete the Wikipedia reflective essay (2-5 pages) assignment on Moodle.

Articles[edit]

This table lists each article that one or more student is working on. If you are not on this table, add yourself to one of the articles in an open slot. If you are assigned an article but would rather do something else, change yourself into a different open slot. If you are really disappointed that the article you really really wanted isn't on this list, see me and we can talk about it. After October there should be no more changes to this table. After you have coordinated with the other editors about where you will work (this means one of you is WP:BOLD and made a sandbox then told the others), link to the draft space in the provided column.
