After hearing about the rape and murder of Jill Meagher, Eurydice Dixon, and the straw that broke the camel's back-Aiia Maasarwe, Makridis set about channelling his frustration into doing something about it. He immediately contacted Curtis Sliwa, the founder and CEO of The Guardian Angels, and was given authorisation to begin a Guardian Angels Chapter in Melbourne, Victoria. Since the chapter's inception in March 2019, Makridis has patrolled the streets of various Melbourne suburbs, in particular, suburbs where the tragic events occurred. In addition, his other community duties involve collecting and disposing of discarded drug paraphernalia in troubled suburbs, litter picking and assisting the homeless.

Media appearances

[edit]

Since his Guardian Angels involvement, Makridis has appeared in The Age newspaper, and consequently on the 3AW drive time show, as well as on A Current Affair.

Personal life

[edit]

Although being involved in a defacto relationship that lasted twelve years, as well as several short term relationships, Makridis has never been married, and has no children. "I'm still waiting for the right one to come along" is how he sums up his bachelor status. His pass time activities reflect his love of cars, fitness and martial arts. On top of his regular job as a waste and recycling collector, Makridis is currently studying to gain a Certificate in Personal Training.
