PIKODEATH is Czech - German deathmetal band originally founded as thrash-death in Liberec in 1998. Now with elements of thrash, grind, death and black metal. As of 2023, the band has a total of four full-length albums[1], one LP marking the band's 25th anniversary, plus additional recordings.

History

[edit]

Beginnings of the band (since 1998)

[edit]

The band's beginnings date back to 1996, when Josef "Pepino" Vích (guitar), Radek "Bull" Herrmann (guitar) and Eda Bílkovský (drums) got together, then Petr "Mramor" Mramornov (bass) and Jaroslav Tauchmann (vocals) joined.

The band was trying to play thrash-death metal and the first concert was in the punk club "U Váchy".  Soon Jaroslav Tauchmann left the band and his place was taken by Jan "Korka" Kolarovic. The musical genre did not change and the band played a total of 3 concerts in the Liberec region. Around the middle of 1998 Bull, Mramor and Korka left the band.

Founding of Pikodeath (since 1998)

[edit]

This Liberec band was founded in 1998. Its founding members were Josef "Pepino" Vích (guitar) and Eduard Bílkovský (drums), Michal "Tazzmann" Patrný (vocals) and Petr "Vetchý" Řeřicha (bass). The band Pikodeath played pure thrash-metal, but thanks to Tazz's "murmur" it was more often referred to as thrash-death.

In 2000 Vetchý left the band and his place was taken by Filip "Fíla" Fořt, who originally came as a substitute, but was so interested in the music that he became a permanent member. At that time he had already done a lot of musical activities (he played with KOULE), but he was more interested in the big beat genre.

2001

[edit]

In 2001, they released their first demo Veselá kopa. After recording the demo, however, Fíla left because he wanted to focus more on alternative music. After less than four months of looking for a bassist, Milan Tvrzník came in. He had no concert experience because he had never played with any band before. At the end of the year, the drummer Eduard Bílkovský left the band from one day to the next - he no longer felt like performing.

A crisis period followed, because it was hard to find a drummer who could play death-grind and it looked like Pikodeath would continue to work with an automaton. Fortunately, it didn't happen and the drummer's stool was temporarily occupied by Jan Zrůst, who in the past worked in the Liberec band KRUCIPÜSK or heavy metal band NERO. Pikodeath started to play more concerts again - all over Bohemia and Moravia and to get more into the underground consciousness[2].

2002 – 2004

[edit]

In October 2002 Milan joined the army and the post of bass player was temporarily taken by Petr "Mramor" Mramornov, who was active in the Liberec HC/punk formation WOJTYLA. Subsequently, drummer Martin "Macetazo" Kocián joined the band and successfully played his first gig on 25th January 2003 and became an official member of the band. At this time Pikodeath takes part in the Avalanche Tour in North Bohemia and Moravia, and at two events meets the Colombian smorgasbord PURULENT, to which, after an unfortunate car accident and the death of guitarist Daev, he dedicates the song Columbia. Pikodeath has played alongside bands such as PURGATORY, KRABATHOR, HYPNOS, VADER and ROOT and for the first time in Germany and Slovakia. They also recorded the song Boneyard by Impetigo for the compilation CD Tribute to Boneyard.

2005 – 2007

[edit]

In 2005 Tazzmann and Macetazo left the band. It was a crisis period as they both left the band at the same time. Macetazo went to hardcore band Lewisit and Act of God and Tazzman became disinterested in music. In 2006, after a long time of searching and experimenting, singer Martin "Dinosaurus" Zajíc and drummer Míra Habětínek settled in Pikodeath.

2008 – 2015

[edit]

The band was recording the album Nasurowo, followed by a series of concerts in Germany, Austria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic[3]. After long personnel disagreements, singer Dinosaurus leaves the band in 2010 and unfortunately drummer Míra leaves as well. The drummer was replaced by Hektor (for years he was in Mladá Boleslav's Return to Innocence) and the vocals were temporarily replaced by Kuba Wagner. However, this line-up broke up at the beginning of 2011, to be more precise - Kuba and Hektor left the band. Macetazo and singer Kwardis return as drummer. Unfortunately, Kwardis announced his departure in the summer of 2011 due to time constraints. In November 2011, Loppi, the singer from the former german band Carpe Noctum, joins Pikodeath. Milan runs out of strength and leaves the band in 2012. The band searches for a bass player for half a year and during that time they play in a three-piece. In the autumn, bassist Lu-ci, who was also a member of Carpe Noctum, joins the band. The band is now Czech-German and with this composition Pikodeath recorded their next studio album Tief in Dir in Davos rec.

2016 – present

Lu-ci leaves the band and Michal "FiDo" Filip takes his place. In this current form[4], the band recorded their first official music video for Time to Die and in the autumn of 2017, again in Davos studio, they will record their next studio album called Insane. After the pre-Christmas album[5] launch in the Liberec club Bunkr, they will go on tour in the Czech Republic and Germany.[6].

Tribute to V.A.R. - Variatorum[7] will be released in June 2021. In tribute to V.A.R., Pikodeath contributes his single Gegen visionen, originally titled Against Visions, together with bands like Tortharry, Big Boss and Pachess. A new music video My Four Walls from the album Tief in Dir dedicated to singer Loppi on his 11th anniversary as frontman appears, and at the end of September 2022 the band is back in Davos studio recording their 4th studio album Killed by silence, more towards death and black metal.
