Plants use carbon dioxide during photosynthesis to produce carbohydrates. All organisms release carbon dioxide during respiration. Carbon is transfered to animals when they eat plants. Decaying organisms can be transformed into fossil fuels (like coal and oil)over millions of years. Carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere when fossil fuels are burned.
