The Museum of Marrakech is an art museum located in the old center of Marrakesh, Morocco. Marrakech Museum's interior. Morocco can be found in the Northern region of Africa[1]. The museum is housed in the Dar Menebhi Palace, constructed at the end of the 19th century by Mehdi Menebhi.[2] The house itself represents an example of classical Moorish architecture, with fountains in the central courtyard, traditional seating areas, a hammam and intricate tilework and carvings. The museum's large atrium was originally a courtyard, and is now covered in glass and fabric. It contains a huge, centrally draped chandelier-like ceiling piece consisting of metal plates decorated with fine geometric and epigraphy cuttings. Several features of the original courtyard, including the floor-set basins and mosaics have been retained. The museum holds exhibits of both modern and traditional Moroccan art together with fine examples of historical books, coins and pottery of Berber, Moroccan, Jewish, and Islamic cultures. The building is often referred to the "jewel of Marrakech" since it includes traditional work of art and architecture.[3]

History[2]

[edit]

Dar Menebhi Palace was commissioned by Medhi Menebhi who was the country's defense minister of Morocco in 1894 to 1908. Menebhi had to go away to England to receive a medal from the Queen and it so happened during that time France and Spain began to colonize North Africa. An autocrat took the opportunity and destroyed the beautiful palace and leave it in ruins. When Morocco gained independence again, they took control of the palace and converted it into a girls school in 1965. Overtime, the building started to deteriorate. The Omar Benjelloun Foundation wanted to recapture the originality of the building and began to renovate it. They chose a Moorish architecture since it was favored by Medhi Menehbi when he first created the Dar Menebhi Palace. Once renovated, it was opened to the public as a museum in 1997.[2]

The beautiful architecture they preserved.[4]

During this time, the specific architecture was used because it was the rulers favorite type of architectural design.
