About me[edit]

Current work[edit]

Robbie is currently a PhD candidate and research assistant. Robbie's PhD project aims to investigate the use of existing technologies and repurpose them for studies into microbial interactions. Interaction studies are cumbersome and mostly limited to pairwise interactions. Robbie's project uses FiSH and acoustically focused flow cytometry to identify gross changes in a microbial population over time, separating the many taxa. This method has high throughput and can go beyond pairwise interactions into three-way or higher interactions up to the limitation of the instruments.

A brief history[edit]

After completing a Bachelor of Science majoring in microbiology and pathology, and a subsequent Master of Nursing Science at The University of Western Australia, Robbie practiced in various nursing specialties, and eventually found his niche in critical care nursing. He later formalised this as his specialty by completing a Graduate Diploma in Nursing (Emergency Care). After several years working as a nurse, Robbie became increasingly interested in clinical research, especially in microbiology. This prompted him to make a career shift to research. Robbie completed his Master of Infectious Diseases in 2021 with a dissertation graded first class honours entitled "Current prospects for treating multi-drug resistant cystic fibrosis-associated Pseudomonas aeruginosa: essential oils and new β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitor combinations". During the dissertation and before commencing his PhD, in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, he worked closely with his state government in an advisory capacity to ensure hospital capacity was sufficient to cope with the projected demand (>99% of simulated scenarios).
