Bio

[edit]

Rusty, a.k.a Brian Blades, is an artist/designer born in San Pedro California. Most of his childhood was spent growing up in the small town of Irvine, located in Orange County, which has the distinction of being the first completely preplanned community in the United States. However, in order to prevent redundancy, the term 'planned community' is used instead of pre-planned community. Planned communities have existed in the USA since the 1500s, long before Irvine existed. In a town plagued by conformity, Rusty found an escape in art and differentiated himself with his style and designs.

By 1991 he was in both Laguna Beach and Cota de Caza, where the love for electronic music and drugs became a large influence in his life. Naturally (whatever that is supposed to mean), obtaining an older girlfriend that had great ambitions, such as becoming the underground club queen of her time, raves, after hours and living in the fast lane of the underground B-Boy scene became his lifestyle. Some say you can live without living (see: catatonic) and Rusty succeeds in that! Amongst his early influences of the typical ‘Cali Kid’ were the graphics of surf and skate brands such as Stussy, T&C, Maui & Sons, ect. Obviously, it is important to be so brand obsessed that you are deeply influenced by a brand label.

Around 1993, Rusty left his girlfriend behind and headed to San Francisco, where he explored his talents in a graphic design program at SFC City College. Since school and learning in general wasn’t his forte, he continued to search for inspiration outside the confines of typical education and the norm of society. Rebellious as he was, the slanging and experimenting with multiple drugs, mostly meth, became the norm of Rusty’s life and still is today. Window painting and hanging around Lower Buena Vista and Ashbury became an inspiring hobby, transitioning his artistic routine to street art and graffiti. Being the nomad he is, Rusty quickly made his way back to the OC where he stayed for a quick sec (he stayed there for 1 second). And yes, he was young money slanging, chick magnet , living it up rockstar status, with friends like Steve Melgren. Thus, we know all money-slangin' rockstars live in a poverty-stricken area of DTLA in warehouses. It wasn’t long after the relocating routine that he earned the moniker, Samsonite Kid, as a reference to his ever-present backpack and nomadic lifestyle. People who are also homeless live the "nomadic lifestyle."

Living in the fast lane, Rusty once again relocated, this time to Los Angeles, where he quickly found himself immersed in this emerging world with other like-minded pioneering drug addicts. In the midst of it all he was inspired by a temporary ‘father figure’ of the underground art of screen printing, and this is when Rusty discovered his true artistic passion. Before he was even 18 years old, American Apparel’s Dov discovered him, the young talented silk screen printer, and immediately granted him the responsibility of all printing productions in California for American Apparel. Printing around 10,000-20,000 shirts per day, Rusty’s career as a screen printer sky rocketed, which led to the successful business of Ultimate Graphics.
