Main characters

Alex

Alex Noah, officially romanized as Arhes Noah (アレス・ノア, Aresu Noa) in Japan, is the primary protagonist of the The Silver Star and from whose viewpoint the story is presented. Born and raised in the small town of Burg, Alex dreams of one day leaving his home and becoming a great adventurer like his idol, the legendary Dragonmaster Dyne. While originally content with merely following in Dyne's footsteps and becoming a Dragonmaster himself, Alex is unsure of the title's importance or even what it means to be a true hero. It isn't until his foster sister and love interest, Luna, is captured that his motivation shifts to protecting her while at the same time saving the world from the power-mad sorceror Ghaleon. While not strictly a silent character, Alex was given very few speaking lines throughout the game in order for the player to impose their own thoughts and emotions onto him, thus becoming more involved in the story. His Japanese name, Arhes, was meant to be a transliteration of the English word "Earth", to act in tandem with Luna as the "Moon". In the Japanese versions, Alex is voiced by Kikuko Inoue in The Silver Star and Akira Ishida in Silver Star Story Complete, while Ashley Angel provides all of his English appearances.

Luna

Luna Noah, officially romanized as Luhna Noah (ルーナ・ノア, Rūna Noa) in the Japanese version, is the 15-year-old heroine of the game and primary love interest of Alex. Originally an orphan with an unknown past, Luna was left in the care of Alex's family as a baby by a mysterious man. An accomplished singer, Luna's songs have magic properties that heal wounds and cause a variety of effects to the world around her, though their power is not understood by anyone she meets. It is revealed that the source of her talent lies in her past, as she was once known as the immortal Goddess Althena, creator of Lunar and its former protector who has since given up her godhood to live among humans. Luna's design, including her billowy sundress and stockings were based around the concept of giving her less revealing clothing than the developers thought was average the video games so player's could focus on her character. Character designer Toshiyuki Kubooka based her colorful bandanna on one worn by a nurse at a dentist office he once went to, and said the she was his favorite character to draw during production of the game's remake. In The Silver Star, Luna is voiced by Kikuko Inoue, who provides the game's opening and ending themes "Lunar" and "Sensitive Dream", and in Silver Star Story Complete by Kyōko Hikami, who sings "Tsubaasa" and "Wind's Nocturne". In both English versions, Rhonda Gibson provides her speaking voice, while Jennifer Stigile performs her singing voice. Like Nall and Ghaleon, Luna make a re-appearance in the game's sequel, Lunar: Eternal Blue, set one thousand years in the future, as a holographic projection.

Nall

Nall (ナル, Naru) is a small, white, cat-like creature with wings who acts as Alex's best friend and sidekick. Like Luna, he is an orphan who was left in the care of Alex's family at an indeterminate age, and does not remember his past or even what he is. Considering himself a brother to Alex, Nall is mouthy and opinionated, but always retains a happy attitude despite his uncertainty of his true nature. Travelling with Alex, Nall discovers that he has mysterious powers and is able to sense the presence of dragons, who reveal that he is actually a juvenile dragon himself. Once he realized his full power, Nall is able to assume a larger and visually more draconic form to allow transport for Alex and his friends. Unlike other party members, Nall is not controllable in combat, but can instead provide support for other characters by holding items and other services. In The Silver Star, Nall can assuage information on enemies by gauging their relative strength to that of the party's, while at the same time healing injured allies automatically when their health drops to dangerous levels. These features were replaced in Silver Star Story Complete to instead allowing Nall the ability to randomly revive fallen characters between combat rounds. Nall's Japanese voice is provided by Rei Sakuma in the original version and Junko Hagimori in the remake. His English voice was recorded by Jackie Powers with the aid of a pitch shifter to make it sound like it was "coming from a small creature". Because of his extended lifespan, Nall makes a re-appearance in the game's sequel, Lunar: Eternal Blue, in human form.

Nash

Nash Rumack, officially romanized as Nasch Rumack (ナッシュ・ルーマック, Nasshu Rūmakku) in the Japanese release, is a 17-year-old star pupil from a prestigious magic school in the floating city of Vane. First appearing during the beginning of Alex's journey, Nash is a specialist of lightning-based spells who serves as the aid to his teacher, the seemingly benign Ghaleon. While outwardly boisterous and egotistical, Nash's true nature is more introverted and worrisome, and his motives within the group remain unknown until his sabotage of the team's airship hinders their journey. Originally branded as a traitor and spy for the now-villanous Ghaleon, Alex's team learn that it was out of concern for his friends, particularly his love-interest Mia, that he kept them from confronting what he precieved to be an unbeatable opponent, and ultimately regained their trust. Nash's most noticeable design element is his pompadour hairstyle, which Kubooka added as a way to instantly recognize him from his small character sprite. His robes, along with the clothing of all citizens of Vane, were based on those worn by Russian Orthodox clergymen. While unvoiced in the original Silver Star, Nash's voice for Silver Star Story Complete is provided by Daisuke Sakaguchi in Japanese, and Leif Huckman in English.

Mia

Mia Ausa (ミア・オーサ, Mia Ōsa) is the 16-year-old daughter of the headmistress of the magic school of Vane, Lemia Ausa. Shy and reclusive, Mia's withdrawn life is interrupted when she meets Alex, and later joins him on his quest to become the next Dragonmaster. A specialist of both ice and fire-based magic spells, Mia is a talented magician who will one day ascend to head of the guild, and thus has access to several areas within Vane that help the party advance the story. While a primary love interest to Nash, she is at first oblivious to his feelings, and only after bringing him back to the team after his supposed betrayel does she begin to reciptocate. Like Nash, Mia's design is reflective of Russian Orthodox stylings, with Kubooka declaring her as his original favorite character design during his work on the Sega-CD version. Mia was not voiced in the original version, but is later portrayed in Silver Star Story Complete by Yōko Asada in Japanese and Jackie Powers in English.

Jessica

Jessica D'Alkirk, officially romanized as simply Jessica Alkirk (ジェシカ・アルカーク, Jeshika Arukāku), is a 16-year-old priestess and daughter of former hero-turned-mayor "Hell Mel" D'Alkirk. The child of a beastman and human women, Jessica leads a dual life: in the presence of her father she is an innocent, well-mannered young lady, while in reality she is tomboyish, brash, and constantly skips her church studies to be with her boyfriend, Kyle. While able to keep up her charade for some time, once Jessica witnesses her father being turned to stone by Ghaleon's servant Xenobia, she swears revenge and join's Alex's cause, promising to become the respectable women she knows she should be in the process. Jessica's primary role in combat is magically healing her teammates while reinforcing their defenses against attacks. Jessica is not voiced in the original Silver Star, but is later portrayed in the remake by Haruna Ikezawa in Japanese and Melissa Gulden in English.

Kyle

Kyle, known as Killy (キリー, Kirī) in Japan, is the 18-year-old leader of a group of highway bandits and powerful swordsman. Kyle's character design was directly based on Val Kilmer's character "Madmartigan" from the 1988 fantasy film Willow.
